It appears that World Book is the encyclopedia of choice. Visiting several school and public libraries there was a set in each one. The set is easy for students to use and provides easy to find information on a variety of topics. The maps, photos and other graphics assist with providing students with a starting point for information. The author at the end of the articles allows students to cite the basic information to begin learning about citations. The reading level is more difficult with younger students which is the audience that would be most likely to use this resource. The 2005 edition in one school will need to be taken off the shelf or replaced and my thoughts would be if it is to be replaced it should be with set more suitable to a younger audience since older students would access online.

The 2005 set of World Book is certainly an outdated set. Maps and photographs are dated as are articles on technology, medicine, and world events such as the various conflicts taking place and the information on world leaders. Nevertheless the majority of information is well covered and includes sufficient photographs and maps to help students with comprehension. The information is well laid out, easy to navigate, and includes comprehensive bibliographies. As far as the printed version of World Book goes I feel that this is a high-quality publication with accurate information in an attractive package. If I had access to an up to date edition I’m sure it would garner a higher recommendation. ( )

Reaction: I appreciate Worldbook’s simple, logical layout with photos and pictures to aid comprehension of text. The color illustrations are attractive and relate to the text. ( )
