An alliterative tale about four foxes who go hunting in the barnyard while their gourmet brother fixes a vegetarian feast.

This book is about a group of foxes who are brothers. They have a hard time finding food when the whole time their older brother Fosdyke cooks meals that are "normal." The three brothers, instead of enjoying his home cooked, human like meals, they want to find their own food and prove that the food you work for is the best kind of food. They go through many ordeals trying to find food such as being egged by chickens and a farmer catching them in action. Their brother advises them on the best times to hunt for food and throughout the book there is a consistent pattern of using "F words."

Frank, Floyd, Freddy, and Flo make fun of their brother Fosdyke's habit of cooking cuisine rather than hunting for food. Despite Frank, Floyd, Freddy, and Flo's failure to capture food, they refuse to eat Fosdyke's fried figs, fennel, and French bread. However, after their plans are continuously foiled, the siblings return to the den and finally eat Fosdyke's food. Later, Fosdyke reveals to his brothers that the reason their hunting failed is because there is a full moon out and their aspect: alliteration. Moreover, educators can have students identify the characteristics of phrases or sentences that have alliteration, as well as create their own alliteration phrases. Due to the text's vibrant imagery and consistent use of alliteration, the intended audience for this text is likely to be students in second, third, and fourth graders. However, this text can be used in fifth and sixth grade to introduce more complex alliterations and introduce more advanced literary devices. The most notable character in this book is Fosdyke because he is a consistent and odd character that brings humor to the text. Personally, I loved this book and would use this book in my classroom to introduce figurative language and/or alliteration to my class. ( )

Frank, Floyd, Freddy, and Flo begin to make fun of their brother Fosdyke for his interest in cooking instead of hunting. However, the four famished foxes begin to appreciate Fosdykes talents when they have trouble on their hunt. This book would be a great tool for teaching phonemic awareness because majority of the words begin with the phoneme /f/. In addition, this book is also a great tool for teaching alliteration to beginning readers. Through the use of the elevated vocabulary, children are exposed to new words that they can use in both their oral language and writing. This is a wonderful book to follow along with and would be of great use for elementary grades. ( )

You can use this book when the students are learning phonics and figurative language. Throughout the book, there is alliteration is used and extensive vocabulary. The intended audience is for children. This book uses words that are so advanced that it is great for many age levels. I enjoy books like this that have an interesting and interacting story because the attention of the child being read to or reading it, will be held throughout. ( )
