Shattergirl, Earth's first lesbian guardian-a brilliant but aloof alien superheroine who can hurl and destroy large objects-is refusing to save people and has gone off the grid. Lena Martin, the street-smart tracker with a silver tongue and a disdain for the rogue guardians she chases, has only days to bring her home. As the pair clash heatedly, masks begin to crack and brutal secrets are exposed that could shatter them both.… (meer)

Talk about a white crow!

What a fantastic story and very relevant in today's society. The writing was everything I expected from Lee, but at the same time, not what I expected at all. The romance in this story is not about two people falling in love with each other and traveling towards their HEA. Instead, this story is about two people shattering the other's perception of the cruelties life throws at us and finding/rediscovering the feeling of excitement, fascination, appeal, and allure (i.e., romance) of everyday life. Lena and Nyah help each other lower their guards long enough to see and believe that they really matter given their unique circumstances.
One of my favorite quotes to hammer this point home: "But I believe that sometimes in life someone’s path intersects with the person they need most at any given moment. They walk together for a little while, sharing the road for as long or as short a time as they need each other." ~ Nyah

Overall, Shattered was another great read by one of my favorite authors. This story is definitely going on my reread list. ( )

I'm not much of a comic books fan (prefer verbal to visual storytelling), but I do have a great fondness for superhero novels. Especially the queer ones - the themes of secret identities and powers that make some people strange and different mesh really well with LGBT stories. Anyway, this book is an excellent gay superhero novel. It explores the pageantry and heroics of the superhero genre as well as the low-key horror of individuals expected to tirelessly struggle against all the evil in the world without verging into dark-and-gritty territory. This is a very #hopepunk story of complex, flawed characters who face the ugliness in the world and fight to make it better, and that fight is very, very hard but far from hopeless.

The relationship between the two leading ladies is a fascinating one. It reminds me of a quote by Elizabeth Gilbert: "People think a soul mate is your perfect fit, and that's what everyone wants. But a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that is holding you back, the person who brings you to your own attention so you can change your life. A true soul mate is probably the most important person you'll ever meet, because they tear down your walls and smack you awake. But to live with a soul mate forever? Nah. Too painful. Soul mates, they come into your life just to reveal another layer of yourself to you, and then leave. A soul mate's purpose is to shake you up, tear apart your ego a little bit, show you your obstacles and addictions, break your heart open so new light can get in, make you so desperate and out of control that you have to transform your life …" That's a perfect explanation of what Lena and Shattergirl are to one another. What they have isn't a traditional romance, but, well. They're soulmates, and everything changes after the time they spent huddled in a cave together.

4.5 for this tale of alien superheroes yoked to work endlessly for the good of humans, one superhero who went missing, and the woman who tracked her down. ( )

I was given this ARC by the publisher in exchange for an Honest Review.

Superheroes and Lesbians. Sign me Up!!

Of course, the book is written by Lee Winter, so, it's much, much more complicated than that, but, as a one line blurb, I'd go with Superheroes and Lesbians, Woo!!

It's the story of Lena. She's a 'tracker' whose job it is to bring back wayward superheroes who have powers. I thought that the world building behind these heroes and the world, in general, was really cool. (And it wasn't just a current world either, it went back into history as well). It's one of the many things in this book world that I'd love to read more about in short stories or other novels.

But, in the current world, a superheroine called Shattergirl has been missing for awhile and the previous trackers have not found hide or hair of her.

So, Lena, who's the best one, gets sent after the elusive superhero.

Her chase and usual tricks used against the heroes don't quite go as they usually do with the other heroes she's convinced to come back to civilization, and that's when the novel gets super awesome interesting.

There's also a Cyclone thrown in as well as each of the main characters are explored in awesome detail throughout the book.

It probably would have been a five-star novel if I had personally liked the ending more, but, unfortunately, I didn't love it.

Still, it was a good book and as I said at the beginning of the review, Lesbians. Superheroes! Woo!! ( )
