The DC SuperHero Girls at Super Hero High is a popular series in my library. After seeing them go out at all the time, I decided to try one for myself. I started with this one because I have an affinity for Harley Quinn comics. On the plus side, Harley is still a lovable rascal here, albeit toned down quite a bit for the intended audience. The main conflict at the fair is interesting when it finally gets going. Also, I think this series is a great way for newcomers to jump into the DC Universe as they will get a headstart on recognizing a lot of characters and their signature traits -- and not just super well-known characters like Wonder Woman, but also characters like Big Barda, Amanda Waller, etc.
On the downside, the writing style had a pacing that was on the slow side. There was a lot at the beginning of the book that seemed like unnecessary setup to the main plot, i.e., it could have been pared down quite a bit and still had the same effect. Also, this is relatively minor, but it irked me a bit that the characters are supposed to be in high school when they act like middle schoolers at best. Granted, this is in line with the target audience, but I just don't know why the author chose to make the characters older than the intended audience and certainly older than how they act.
This is a chapter book novel and NOT graphic novel, which is fine, especially for children whose parents aren't thrilled about them reading comics (with the false assumption that they are serious reading). However, I do think that book could have benefited from a few pictures here and there; that might have helped with the pacing as the author wouldn't have to describe characters in painstaking detail as much then.
