To be honest, this is not my normal genre. At first, I was compelled by the suspense to continue reading; even on the edge of my seat. However, the similarities to the DaVinci Code began to make me question if this was the Christian Fiction that I had assumed it was. It wasn't. Add in some profanity and an unbelievable romance, and I became disallusioned. When the celibate priest fell in infatuation (not love) at first sight, I was pulled out of the story. Then as they hugged for the first time, he was already thinking "wife," I was disappointed. When the priest had sex with her, even though it meant the loss of all his standing in the church, I stopped. I can not recommend this book to anyone. Very disappointing. If you can, for the moment, accept that time travel in any sense has been discovered, this is a very plausible tale of the possible outcome.Father Dyson is a priest in the Church of the Second Coming, a near-future replacement of the Catholic Church that has, in a short period of time, become the dominant political and religious force on the planet. The US and UK, among others, have become theocracies under a totalitarian Church control. How did this happen so quickly? Well, it seems, documented reports of the appearance of an ethereal Jesus started occurring on a regular basis in locations around the world. They would only appear for a few minutes or hours per year, but still...it gave the church cred and the masses deferred to it in totality. With such responsibility comes power, power corrupts, yada yada. Father Dyson is a genuine guy. He buys into the church line, and as their top researcher, believes he's doing the work of his lord. Except things aren't as they seem to be....after a friend (and fellow priest) is hit and killed by a car prior to meeting him to tell him something of vital importance, a report (a womans, no less!) approaches Dyson with a portion of the story and activates his long-dormant hormones. Dyson finds himself on hot on the trail of something that can break the church scam wide open when bam! Seems those with the power aren't keen to let it slip away so easily. My only real complaint about this book is the romance with the reporter was rather underplayed -- her character rather underdeveloped. A few other characters could have used further development too...the flow of the book was nice as it was, but I think it could have been longer. Or maybe I liked it enough that I just didn't want it to end so soon. Deze bespreking is geschreven voor LibraryThing Vroege Recensenten. Yesterday's Savior is a good read for anyone who enjoys the mystery involved in conspiracy theories. Author Keith Bliss wrote of a world wide religion based on an event in 2010 and how by exploiting people's faith "the church" is much more than a place to worship on Sundays! This book became clichéd. The romance and the thriller scenes were easily skimmed through. A twist was not very exciting. The sci-fi element that has some use had only been utilized in the simplest, predictable form when I stopped reading at about sixty percent through. I cannot pick it up again. I give it two stars because I had high hopes for it. I received this book as a free preview copy through LibraryThing. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
The Second Coming is here! Deny it at your peril! By the year 2075 most of the western world has converted to the religion of the Church of the Second Coming. From its humble beginnings, as the figure of Christ began to appear all around the globe, the Church has grown to achieve absolute world power. But rumors surround the Church of the Second Coming, and hint, like so many regimes before it, of deeply held secrets and the use of brutal power to quiet 'those who oppose.' When David Dyson, a believer and devout priest working for the Church of the Second Coming, is interviewed by a tough female reporter about the outrageous rumors surrounding the Church, Dyson discovers that his whole life may have been built around a lie. Will his crisis of faith reveal the Church of the Second Coming's astonishing secrets? You'll be surprised by the revelation and shocked by the misunderstanding of the brutal regime. Yesterday's Savior is a reminder, particularly relevant in this day and age, that freedom is worth fighting for. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
