I read this book after hearing an interview with the author on public radio. (March 30, 2018 on https://www.npr.org/podcasts/583350334/science-friday) Written by an amateur bee enthusiast, it talks about all the bees that exist besides honey bees. It delves into the lives of many types of bees (which are wide and varied!) and a discussion of how they function as pollinators. Since honey bees have been having a lot of problems in the last couple of decades, this is also a discussion of who else pollinates and can we domesticate any of those populations. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

A New York Times 2018 Holiday Gift Selection Honey bees get all the press, but the fascinating story of North America's native bees--endangered species essential to our ecosystems and food supplies--is just as crucial. Through interviews with farmers, gardeners, scientists, and bee experts, Our Native Bees explores the importance of native bees and focuses on why they play a key role in gardening and agriculture. The people and stories are compelling: Paige Embry goes on a bee hunt with the world expert on the likely extinct Franklin's bumble bee, raises blue orchard bees in her refrigerator, and learns about an organization that turns the out-of-play areas in golf courses into pollinator habitats. Our Native Bees is a fascinating, must-read for fans of natural history and science and anyone curious about bees. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

As a format note: I read this in the Kindle edition, and I think my appreciation suffered because of it. The format clearly would be better in the dead-format, as would the pictures (which I assume are in color when on paper). ( )
