This book follows the life, career, and death of the famous artist, Andy Warhol. The graphics intrigued me more than anything else. Andy grew up the youngest of three brothers and had trouble fitting in. His love of art began as a child. He loved picture books, comic books, coloring books, and he also loved collecting pictures of movie stars. His favorite movie star was Shirley Temple and upon joining her fan club, he received a picture of her and cherished it. He later said his real passion was tap dancing. When he was eight, he had rheumatic fever which changed him. This book is great for anyone who is interested in Andy Warhol or writing a paper on him! ( ) I don't think I could have disliked this book if I tried, mainly because I just love Andy Warhol's work. although after reading this book I now know that maniy of his ideas were spin offs of another artists. The book soryt of follows his life through his paintings and I liked how it focuses on excplaing his inspirations for many of his popular art works. As someone who has always had an interest in Andy Warhol, this book proved to be an interesting read for me. A biographical picture book, it begins with stories of Andy's boyhood and follows his life through his career as an artist. Interestingly enough, the descriptions of his life and philosophies are much more detailed in the period of his childhood. After the biographical content there is an timeline that offers a very cursory overview of Andy's entire life, from his birth until his passing. Of course, it only picks a select few of his artistic endeavors, and all of these descriptions are free from much of the controversy that surrounded Andy's career as an artist. Very little attention is given to the shooting that nearly killed Andy and would leave his life changed forever, but that is understandable considering this is a book designed for middle and high-school aged children. For this audience, the primary focus of the book has been a general overview of Andy's life, with most of the attention and content focused on his pop art career. The illustrations are beautifully rendered, and many of the photographs were images I had not previously seen, which was refreshing for me as a reader. I highly recommend this book for any young student wishing to become acquainted with the art and design aesthetic of Andy Warhol. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

A leader of the American art movement known as Pop, short for "popular culture," Warhol changed the way we think of art. Assisted by photographs taken of Warhol throughout his life, and examples of his early drawings and best-known works, author Rubin traces his rise from poverty to wealth, and from obscurity to fame. After attending art school in Pittsburgh, Warhol started a career as a commercial artist in New York, and quickly won acclaim for his creative advertisements. When he turned to "real" painting, he used his background in commercial illustration and blurred the line between high and low art. Some critics have said that Warhol's pictures of Campbell's soup cans and Coca-Cola bottles represent American life. But Warhol said, "I just paint those objects in my paintings because those are the things I know best. I think of myself as an American artist."--From publisher description.
