Fiction. Literature. Romance. HTML:New York Times bestselling author LaVyrle Spencer presents a beautiful and moving tale of a false marriage that leads to true love.
The wedding of Clay Forrester and Catherine Anderson was the social event of the season. It seemed like a page out of a fairy tale. But everything about it—from the formal vows to the magnificent reception—was a lie. Catherine had reluctantly agreed to Clay’s “marriage of convenience”—and the only thing that could threaten their arrangement was the unexpected arrival of love.
“A superb story.”—Los Angeles Times
“LaVyrle Spencer’s legions of fans are drawn to her fiction because of its uncalculated emotion and the author’s almost old-fashioned sense of integrity.”—Chicago Tribune

It is set in the 1980's, but the way the characters behave and the story line makes it seem like the 1960's. It is a pretty simple story with simple people. There was a lot of both characters running hot and cold for each other. Playing games with one another. It doesn't get a place on my bookshelf as I don't need to read it again. ( )

I don't know what to say.

Dated romance.

Hero goes back to ex that was a non ex in-between being with heroine.

Heroine confronts Hero about what ex has told her, she says

'You've been sleeping with her all the time you lied to me and said you weren't, so why not move in with her permanently? Do you think everybody doesn't know what's been going on between you when you stood at your own wedding reception and French-kissed her in front of everybody there? Did you tell your mother you'd stepped out for air when you disappeared with Jill on New Year's Eve? How dumb do you think I am, Clay? And why are you hanging around here like a stray dog? I'm not going to take you in and feed you and ask you if you'd like to live with me, because I want this farce to be over. I don't want your phony condescension or your two-bit psychoanalysis about my being emotionally crippled! I don't want you coming in here fawning over my daughter—the one I had while you were staying nights at Jill's house. All I want is what you agreed to give me. Child support for Melissa and my college education paid for. And I want you out of here—out!—so I can get on with my life!”'

He denies cheating.
But when she asks him to leave he goes back to the ex, nonex.

HEA if you believe it. ( )

This book was a little disappointing. It was 90% dialogue and really not much action at all. What little that did happen was a wedding, birth of a baby and then sex. The dialogue in between was mainly just rehashing the same arguments. No, not a very satisfying book but a waste of time. ( )

I was feeling nostalgic this week and decided to reread this story. I originally read Separate Beds in 1997. It is interesting to read a book written in the 80's, that you first read in the 90's, and then reread in 2013. I found that even though my perspective with age has changed, I still enjoyed the story and that the hero still frustrated me. I especially got a laugh out of the mannerisms and fashion from the 80's! The tuxedo shirts (ruffled and apricot colored) are a great example of a good giggle!

I understand that LaVyrle Spencer did not write the most thought provoking books, but I cannot help but thoroughly enjoy her stories. Maybe it is the nostalgia from my childhood years of reading, but LaVyrle Spencer's stories are ones I still love and cherish. So, this was a "what the heck" reread that I still enjoyed. It was a nice way to spend a rainy day. ( )

Circumstances being what they were, it was ironic that Catherine Anderson knew little more of Clay Forrester than his name.
