The main character is very shallow and doesn't improve much throughout the story and then the romance in here is just bad. It starts off sweet but then just turns cringy. I was not a fan. ( ) 3.5 stars. Two word summary: oh, Reiko. And the long version: There were many things I liked about this and I absolutely loved the first quarter. Then the whole Seth thing happened and I was not a fan of their relationship at all - probably the main reason it took me so long to read the last 150 pages. Reiko had so many things going on in her life and if there's one thing I cannot stand, it's lying, and it sometimes felt like she did nothing but - to her family, her friends, her boyfriend, herself. She did end up learning a lot about herself and really growing as a character, even though it took her a long while to actually get there. I think the ending was a bit rushed and maybe too convenient, but still good overall! I would've loved to get a more in-depth look at Reiko figuring things out with Koji especially. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

As often as possible high school senior Reiko Smith-Mori drives to the nearby California desert to escape from the increasingly claustrophobic life at home and her parents expectations, and there she meets Seth Rogers, a boy from school who shares her love of the desert but also wants a closer relationship with Reiko, which is just adding to her problems--because Reiko has a secret: in her mind her older sister, Mika, who died years ago, is always with her, at home and school, and she has never allowed herself to say good-bye.
