This fictionalised-nonfiction picture book focuses on three women: Hazel, a Chinese American who joined the WASP; Marlene, who joined the ATA in England; and Lilya, one of the Russian “Night Witches”. It’s aimed at older children -- 80 pages, with more text than picture books usually have -- and didn’t tell me anything about female pilots in WWII that I didn’t already know.

However, I loved the illustrations -- there are beautiful full-page landscapes, and lots of pages have lots of little sketches of people, showing the different things they did. (Is there an illustration term for this sort of thing?) And I like how the style is reminiscent of 1940s artwork. ( )

This book is geared towards elementary or middle school kids, and is intended to help teach them about WASPS. This would be good to use in a history class, and you could use as a preview or a review activity, whichever you feel like will fit better time wise. ( )
