In Defense of Witches takes witches — unmarried, childless, strong, independent women in control of their future, their time, and their sexuality — and uses those elements to explore how women who possessed those attributes, or who simply failed to comply with what men wanted of them, were accused of witchcraft and persecuted. Then the book focuses on how modern women who are independent, childless, and elderly must still deal with some of the same pressures as the witches of old did. Chollet celebrates not only the witches of the past, but also the so-called “witches” of today: independent women who have chosen not to have children, aren’t always coupled, often defy traditional beauty norms (letting their hair go gray), and thus operate outside the established social order....“In Defense of Witches” explores how women who assert their powers are too often seen as a threat to men and society, how those who don’t bear children are too often seen as a disturbing anomaly and how women at middle age too often disappear....Chollet’s work has broken ground and provided important pushback. “In Defense of Witches” demonstrates that a woman’s decision to go against the grain — especially by not having children — inevitably becomes a political act, even an act of resistance. In this spirited yet uneven polemic, journalist Chollet traces misogynistic attitudes in Western society back to witch hunts that occurred in Europe and the U.S. from the 1300s to the 1700s. These periodic public tortures and executions of women “induced all women to be discreet, docile, and submissive,” according to Chollet, and drove them into an acceptance of the “gendered division of labor required by capitalism.” ... Though her iconoclastic wit shines, Chollet’s provocations ultimately come across as more defensive than revolutionary. This call for change feels like old news.

Mijn eerste spreekbeurt ooit ging over heksen, ze hebben me altijd al gefascineerd. Toen ik de (prachtige) cover van dit boek zag wist ik dan ook direct dat dit een boek voor mij was.
Heksen is geen typisch boek over heksen dus verwacht geen toverspreuken, recepten voor liefdesdrankjes of foto’s van zwarte katten. Dit boek gaat over wat heks zijn inhoudt, vroeger én nu, het gaat over onafhankelijke vrouwen vol oerkennis en intuïtie die hun eigen (kinderloze) pad volgen én trots zijn op hun lichaam, ongeacht hun leeftijd.
Chollet toont aan dat het feit dat heksen zijn uitgeroeid (althans dat poogde men toch) niet enkel een persoonlijk en familiaal drama is maar een drama voor de ganse wereld. Het is een trauma dat nog steeds nazindert. Als we toen niet wanhopig de heks en haar kennis en kunde hadden vernietigd dan was de mensheid én de aarde, onze natuur er niet zo slecht aan toe geweest. Heksen werkten samen met de natuur, de bange mannen die de macht overnamen hebben de natuur om zeep geholpen. Het geweld tegen vrouwen, in de medische wereld, het gezin, de maatschappij als geheel hangt samen met het geweld tegen alles en iedereen die anders is. En hangt ook samen met het geweld dat wij eeuwenlang ten op zichte van de natuur hebben uitgeoefend. Het is dus geen wonder dat er, nu de wereld (vaak letterlijk) in brand staat er een heropleving is van de interesse in heksen en hun kunde.
Mona laat ons op een boeiende (veelal Frans gerichte) manier zien wat heks zijn echt inhield, hoe ze ijverig negatief werden neergezet en hoe dat nog steeds nawerking heeft in onze hedendaagse maatschappij. Ze schrijft emotioneel en bevlogen maar ook met kennis van zaken. Het boek bevat een berg voetnoten en een uitgebreide bibliografie voor wie meer wil weten.
Ik heb (groen) gelachen, ik heb gehuild, ik heb met open mond gelezen en ik ben er meer en meer van overtuigd dat ook ik een heks ben of toch zeker (meer) wil zijn.
“Eerherstel voor de vrouwelijke rebel” want de wereld is niet wat ze ons willen doen uitschijnen. Heksen, het boek, biedt ons katogen om door die schijnwerkelijkheid te kijken en ons eigen, juistere wereldbeeld te vormen en daarna de wereld op zijn kop te zetten! (
