This New Adult book is the first in the Owatonna U Series, a spin off from the best selling Harrisburg Railers Hockey Series. Ryker is hockey royalty, Jacob is a poor country boy. Can two vastly different people find common ground and become the men they want to be? Ryker comes from a long line of championship-winning hockey players. Playing college hockey to develop his game is his only focus, and nothing will stand in the way of him working to become the best player. He has no room for relationships, people who point out his flaws, or anyone who calls him on his dreams. He certainly has no place for love, and meeting Jacob is nothing but a useful distraction on the side. After all trying to get his Owatonna Eagles teammate into bed is less work and more play. When tragedy rocks his family, his charmed life crumbles, and the only person he can turn to is the same one who claims to hate him. Jacob Benson has only known hard work and stifling conservative values his whole life. Born and raised in the small rural community of Eden Crossing, Minnesota, he's the only son of a hard-working but struggling dairy farming family. Jacob is using his skills in hockey to finance his way to an agricultural science degree. These four years at Owatonna U. will probably be the only time he has to enjoy life, gain acceptance about his sexuality, and live openly before his inevitable return to the farm. Running into a pretty rich boy like Ryker Madsen is putting a damper on his enjoyment of life away from home. Ryker's flip, conceited, carefree attitude grates on Jacob's every nerve. So why, if Ryker is everything he dislikes, does he want nothing more than to explore the sinful dreams that his annoying teammate stars in every night?… (meer)

I really enjoyed the first chapter, but once Justin and Ten left the main scene, Ryker on his own was not enough to capture my interest, since I didn't care about Jacob at all.

I skipped so many pages that the story became completely meaningless to me. Thus, I'm abandoning this series.

I'm much more interested in the Arizona Raptors series, which I hope to start next month.

This is the first book in a new spin-off series from the Harrisburg Railers set in the world of college hockey and it stars Ryker, who is the son of Jared Madsen, Railers’ coach and former hockey player. If you’ve read the Railers series then you will have come across Ryker previously, and I’ve been waiting for his story in some form or another ever since he declared he’d fooled around with guys as well as girls.

Hockey, family, and young characters have all been written, and written well, by these authors, so I had faith that these aspects of the story wouldn’t disappoint me. And they didn’t.

There’s (not quite) enemies to lovers, and a lot of emotional immaturity as you would except from lads this age. It’s very much an ‘opposites attract’ story, with Ryker being Hockey Royalty and the money that provides, and Jacob being a country farm boy, using his hockey scholarship as a means to earn his agricultural degree.

There are mentions of an event that happened in Railers 6, so if you haven’t already read that you may want to read that first. Not because it doesn’t make sense in this story, it does, the authors have made sure of that. But the emotional impact of that event lies in book 6 of Railers. These terrible moments really show how much Ryker has come to rely on Jacob, how far their love has come. Because, forget hockey, and farming, and college, ultimately this is a tale of that first blinding love, and it is told beautifully.

It ends on a HFN, but I suspect this series will develop in the same way as the parent series and we will catch up with previous couples as we move through the series. ( )

The first third or so of this romance novel was better than the rest—later on, the story felt a bit rushed and flat. ( )
