Thorough and well organized — I especially liked the structure, how well the conclusions summarized the preceding sections. It helped solidify the information I'd just read (and there was a lot of it). Of particular nIt's extensively footnoted in a way that makes my academic side happy, but the general reader doesn't need to worry about missing anything. I wouldn't call this the zippiest read on the planet, but it does satisfy if you're looking for some meaty scholarship. It's guaranteed to teach you something, not only about the women that are the focus of this book, but also the history of the area in general and other studies into similar periods. Lipscomb would compare and contrast other studies with her own to highlight where people have done research, where the research correlates and where more research needs to be done. I thought that just as fascinating as Lipscomb's study itself. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
Most of the women who ever lived left no trace of their existence on the record of history. In this work, Suzannah Lipscomb recovers the lives and aspirations of ordinary sixteenth- and seventeenth-century French women, using rich source material to show what they thought about their lives, menfolk, friendships, faith, and sex.
