Set in modern-day Tel Aviv, a young man, Koby Franco, receives an urgent phone call from a female soldier. Learning that his estranged father may have been a victim of a suicide bombing in Hadera, Koby reluctantly joins the soldier in searching for clues. His death would certainly explain his empty apartment and disconnected phone line. As Koby tries to unravel the mystery of his father's death, he finds himself piecing together not only the last few months of his father's life but his entire identity.… (meer)

This is very interesting, I didn't know the story took place in Israel until I read it. I also didn't know it was written by a woman as it failed the Bechdel test pretty hard lol. My first impressions were that it was a detective story about a missing father with a romantic subplot. I actually liked the epilogue where Joe Sacco interviews Rutu Modan: it offers a lot more insight towards her intentions than I took out of it. Sadly though, while "Exit Wounds" alludes to the idea of death and our refusal to accept it, it never comes out as bold, ambitious, or even as explicit as the interview would suggest. With that being said, I notice that "The Property" has a literal fucking graveyard for the cover so I'm expecting much more from her career ^^

Both the art and the Israeli setting interested me. I thought the book did a good job if introducing the perspective of people who live in a place where bombings happen every day. That being said, I didn't really care for the story, and I thought the portrayal of the female characters was callous and shallow. ( )

It's the kind of narrative that takes you on a ride, you're never quite sure where you're going, but somehow it pulls it off and remains compelling from beginning to end. Don't read it expecting some neat ending with all the loose ends having been tied. Elusive and evocative through and through. ( )

Fascinating read. Distinct art and coloring style lends a surrealness to this story. Ends unresolved in a satisfying way. ( )

My first graphic novel, and I hated it. I thought the story was flimsy - I had trouble understanding who was who, and well it just didn't click for me. ( )

This astoundingly thought-provoking book is one of the best of the year, demonstrating the full power of the comic medium.

A heart-piercing, tough-minded love story.
