Actual Rating: 4.0

This series is going to go down as one of my favorite thriller/mystery series ever! Eight follows the same characters we have read about for so long; Sofia Xander now runs a center for abused women and children, and all is going well. Until one day, a violent ex-husband tracks down his wife and daughter at Sofia's center and holds eight people hostage to get them back. Sofia has no choice but to kill him, and though everyone says she did the right thing, Sofia can't help but feel like being the one to end a life is a burden much too heavy to bear. And then the situation worsens, when someone starts killing off the hostages, one by one...

The plot was very exciting, and I loved how there was a very intense scene very early on which sort of set other events in motion. Although the pacing slowed down a little around the 30% mark, it picked up again quite fast and once I got to the second half, I couldn't put the book down. This book is a little like a whodunnit, but I really loved how the plot kept throwing little twists into the story that made me second guess my prediction (I was wrong in the end, ha).

The character development was really interesting in this one, especially because a lot of it focused on Sofia, a character we already know who went through another cataclysmic event. I really liked how the book also focused on her relationship with Ryan, and how even though the main plot of Eight centered around the mystery, there were more domestic internal conflicts around the topic of family that I could relate a lot to.

Laura was another character who I really grew to love. She wasn't my favorite when she was first introduced, but her character development is one of the most powerful and persistent that I have ever read. Her screentime was limited in Eight, but just by reading about how people talked about her, Laura had a really strong presence in the book, and she is slowly becoming one of my favorite characters!

Lastly, the writing style was, as usual, great. I always love reading the perspective of the antagonist without being told who they are, and this book did a really good job with keeping me on the edge of my seat that way. For any mystery/thriller/suspense lover, I'd recommend this book, but I'd definitely suggest starting all the way from book one to get the full experience! ( )

I have been reading Jane Blythe’s Count To Ten series since Book I, One, which is currently free. If you are a serial killer, suspense/thriller lover like me, this is one you will want to grab…ASAP!

It’s not enough that they survived one life threatening situation, an angry husband wants the wife and daughter that Sofia is harboring in the center for abused women and children. She will put her life on the line for her charges.

Jane Blythe has the ability to keep me on pins and needles, totally enthralled with a story that refuses to let me go…AND leaves me craving more. Her characters are to die for and they take me on a roller coaster ride filled with ups and downs and twists and turns, at times leaving me breathless with anticipation.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Eight by Jane Blythe.
