Award-winning author Duncan Tonatiuh brings to life the story of a Mexican-American war hero

José de la Luz Sáenz (1888–1953)—or Luz—believed in fighting for what was right. Although he was born in the United States, he and his family experienced prejudice because of their Mexican heritage. When World War I broke out, Luz volunteered to join the fight. Because of his ability to quickly learn languages, he became part of the Intelligence Office in Europe. However, despite his hard work and intellect, Luz often didn't receive credit for his contributions. Upon his return to the US, he joined other Mexican-Americans whom he had met in the army to fight for equality. His contribution, along with others, ultimately led to the creation of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), which is the oldest Latino civil rights organization. Soldier for Equality is based in part on Luz's diary during the war. It includes a biography of Luz's later years, an author's note, a timeline, a bibliography, and an index.

This book would be good for all elementary ages depending on the intended use for the book.
This book follows the story of Jose de la Luz Saenz, a Hispanic American who joins the war in an effort to gain equality for all Hispanics.
This would be a great book to use when discussing World War 1 or to use as Hispanic American representation.

Feel the emotion as you read through this book and become empowered by the character's bravery despite him facing constant judgment during the Hispanic Civil Rights Movement. ( )

Award-winning author and illustrator Duncan Tonatiuh delivers the compelling and little-known story of Jose de la Luz Saenz, a Mexican-American school teacher who fought for the U.S. in World War I and later co-founded the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). Tonatiuh's character illustrations are influenced by the pre-Columbian Aztec style while still maintaining modern (to the WWI time period) dress and surrounded by time period background images. The story, itself, is an inspirational look at a significant, though largely unknown, champion of Mexican-American rights and humble servant to his country during a time of crisis overseas. We need heroes like Luz to light the way for equality and justice in our country, today. This story needs to be heard! Stocked with copious notes, bibliographies, and a timeline, the story stands in accuracy and verifiability. Do yourself a favor and learn about Luz! ( )

A super passionate, powerful story representing the Mexican-American fight for civil rights It is very well written and you can feel the emotion behind the text. This is a longer story so I would introduce it to those in third grade and above. It was frustrating to see the problems the main character was facing. He was judged constantly no matter how much he fought and appreciated his country. The judgement was super upsetting to read about. It was as if he had to always prove himself everyday. There is so much history you can learn by first reading this book, and you can create very meaningful discussions from this topic. So many themes can be found within this one story.

Straight up an amazingly told story. He fought for what was right even in the face of judgment. Not only did he join the army but he was a part of the intelligent unit. He fought for America but also had to fight for his rights in America. ( )
