Kaden is the second book in the ‘Boyfriend for Hire’ series. It stars Ryan Levesque, a Hollywood actor and Kaden Moore, the boyfriend for hire. This story is told in third person from both Ryan and Kaden’s povs.

I didn’t read the first book in this series, but didn’t feel lost reading this one. It can be read as a standalone.

I like the fake boyfriend trope. Books with this trope are a nice way to pass the time because they’re predictable. However, this story is more complicated than the fluffy fake boyfriend books I’ve read in the past, and I really liked the way it was handled in this book. A warning that there are some serious issues brought up and it might trigger some readers. Both characters are affected by this issue, Kaden far in his past and Ryan most recently, which is part of the reason he has to hire a fake boyfriend.

Kaden has worked as a fake boyfriend for about three years, but never with someone as high profile as Ryan. A ranty video Ryan made at a party drew harsh criticism, and the video is destroying his image. Ryan doesn’t like the idea of hiring Kaden, but he needs to appear normal with a steady boyfriend. Ryan and Kaden don’t hit it off at first but Ryan is in a tough spot so sucks it up. Both men are more similar than they know, but they handle it differently. Kaden is closed off, unable to trust anyone enough to get close, even family. Ryan’s emotions and thoughts are swirling. He can’t get a handle on them to know who to trust, other than his sister who is his anchor. The story takes place over a week, so it seems rather sudden that these two characters end up trusting each other at the end of that time. But they are in each other’s presence almost constantly so that likely has some effect on breaking down each other’s walls.

I thought the authors did an excellent job depicting Ryan and his inability to handle what happened to him and his inability to trust his own judgement. His character growth was also well done. I was a bit disappointed with Kaden. He was pretty much written the same throughout the entire book, until the epilogue. Kaden came across as a bit of a flat character, so I think his restraint in the story was maybe too much since he didn’t seem to have much personality.

The one part of the book I thought didn’t work was the first chapter. It felt like it wasn’t part of the same story, it had a different feel. Nothing much happened in chapter one and if I’d read that chapter only to decide if I was going to purchase the book, I would have surmised that the story was boring, because that chapter was…boring.

Overall, I enjoyed Kaden quite a bit and that was mostly because of Ryan and the fact that more serious issues were tackled in this ‘fake boyfriend’ trope than the other books in this trope that I’ve read before. Kaden himself was okay, and the first chapter didn’t hook me in. I recommend Kaden to other readers and give it 4 Stars

This is book two of the Boyfriend for Hire series. The only connection to the first book is the company the 'boyfriends' work for, so this can be read as a stand-alone.

What starts off as damage control for a self absorbed Hollywood actor soon becomes a whole lot more. An abusive relationship, mentally and possibly physically, colours much of Ryan's actions especially in his burgeoning relationship with Kaden as it moves from fake boyfriend to friend to lover.

It's slow burn with both men having issues from past relationships to overcome.

Another enjoyable read from this pairing. ( )
