After escaping a Soviet prison camp, Lina is pursued by a powerful witch and her shadow wolves in a riveting debut that imbues frozen wilderness with fairy-tale magic.

All that twelve-year-old Lina knows of the world is the Stalinist labor camp where she was born, a place of hunger, cruelty, and deprivation. After a daring escape into the frigid Siberian wilds with her best friend, Bogdan, Lina vows to reach Moscow and find her long-lost grandmother, whom she hopes will help her return to the camp to rescue her mother. She seems drawn to some mysterious power within Lina herself. Pursued by the witch and in fear of recapture, Lina will need every ounce of courage she has â?? and a whisper of her own magic â?? if she and Bogdan are to survive the journey and bring hope to a dark place. Abstract: After escaping a Soviet prison camp, Lina is pursued by a powerful witch and her shadow wolves in a riveting debut that imbues frozen wilderness with fairy-tale magic. But out in the dark forests and haunted tundras, Lina and Bogdan catch the eye of a vengeful witch, a refugee of oppressive new laws about magic, who commands an army of shadow wolves. She seems drawn to some mysterious power within Lina herself. Pursued by the witch and in fear of recapture, Lina will need every ounce of courage she has - and a whisper of her own magic - if she and Bogdan are to survive the journey and bring hope to a dark place. An enthralling debut that weaves Russian fairy tales through a fast-paced adventure.

"Nevertell" started well and I liked Lina’s description of the harsh conditions she and the other prisoners had to face in the Siberian labour camp. There was also a lot of action when she and Bogdan first escaped as they battled with the Siberian winter and the long journey ahead but then they met the sorceress, Svetlana, and her ghost wolves. I didn’t mind the magical elements that were introduced but I found the novel went downhill at the midway point, especially once we discovered who Svetlana really was. Suddenly, she went from evil sorceress to sweet, little, old lady.

I am sure "Nevertell" will appeal to many middle grade readers with its blend of action, magic and Russian folklore, but it didn’t do much for me. ( )

Nevertell is an exciting historical fantasy about a girl born in a labor camp in Russia. Twelve year old Lina works in the greenhouse there growing food for the guards but dreams about Moscow where her grandmother lives. Then an unexpected chance allows her to escape, but the woods outside the camp are full of old and mysterious beings controlled by a witch. Lina has to figure out who is a friend and how to get to Moscow and her grandmother.

The setting for this book is not one I’ve read before and the book does a good job of showing the terrible parts of the camp while still remembering the target age of its readers. Once she is outside the camp one of the major threats in addition to the magical creatures is the cold, all pervasive and inescapable. I could feel the chill of it, especially at one point when it is so cold their breath crystallizes as they speak! I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to people who are looking for fantasy with grounding in the real world. ( )

Lina makes a daring escape from the Soviet prison camp where she was born, racing through the harsh Siberian wilderness where magic holds sway. Along the way she discovers secrets about her family and herself, and gains friends in some unlikely places.

Throughout this book you can really feel the biting cold of the Siberian winter, the hunger and weakness of the prisoners, and the love between family and friends. Orton describes some of the hard truths of the camp without getting overly dark, and the blend of fantasy and historical fiction makes for a good way to explore a difficult topic. At times the pace slackened off and the story started to feel a bit directionless, but overall a solid read with a unique tale to tell.

I have been a fan of Russian fairy tales ever since I jumped into THE BEAR AND THE NIGHTINGALE. As if escaping from a Siberian work camp wasn't hard enough for Lina and Bogey they then must survive the ghost wolves, evil witch who is a cross between Baba Yaga and the Snow Queen and a Siberian winter. Lina becomes aware of her own powers and needs to get back to her mother who is still in the camp and in great danger but knowing who to trust - including yourself, is hard. I don't want to give away spoilers but my only criticism was the dual role of Svetlana which seems out of character. Great pick for kids that crave constant adventure with a dose of the mystical. My thanks to the publisher for the advance copy. ( )
