The story begins with the revelation that a blackmail ring has been driving prominent persons to suicide and that a special agent from Scotland Yard is visiting a country house where his fiancé is staying to help ferret out the ringleader. Complications ensue when another young man, friend of the narrator, declares his intention of marrying the same young woman. When the narrator and his friend arrive they find the house in turmoil and the young woman missing. Yet a third man is pressuring her to marry him. During a fancy dress ball a body is found in a nearby pond and attention shifts to the murder. Indeed, the blackmail gang seems almost forgotten from the middle of the novel until the climax. The portrayal of tension in the household is well written but the plot is a little difficult to follow. Enjoyable as a sample of the era. As the title might lead you to expect, this mystery is about a murder at a fancy-dress party. The murder takes over 100 pages to happen, which seems like rather a long time given that the word “Death” is right there in the title. And although I found this a light book, it did not strike me as terribly funny or clever. The narrator voices some shockingly sexist sentiments, and they are likely more shocking to me because the author was actually a woman writing under a male pseudonym. Was relieved that this was a borrow rather than a buy. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
