Attendre d'aborder le dernier tiers du roman pour commencer à comprendre de quoi il retourne, c'est peut-être très fort de la part de l'auteure, mais très frustrant pour la lectrice que je suis. Je n'ai pas réussi à "entrer" réellement dans cette histoire très sombre et compliquée. ( )

As the book opens, Olenka is working as a house cleaner in Helsinki. She frequently visits a park and sits on a bench to observe a family playing with their dog in the dog park. As she sits there one evening, a woman sits down next to her, a woman from the past Olenka is trying to escape. As the book progresses, we learn about Olenka's past life in troubled Ukraine in flashbacks that alternate with the story of what happens after Olenka is discovered in Helsinki in the present.

The slow reveals as Olenka's story unfolds, and the way her story is structured make this a well-written book, puzzling at first but masterfully put together. And it was fascinating to read about life in corruption-ridden Ukraine in the time of its early independence after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Highly recommended.

Nach "Die Sache mit Norma" (ID-A 17/17) ein literarischer Thriller der preisgekrönten finnisch-estnischen Autorin, der das ausbeuterische Leihmutterschaftssystem der Ukraine beschreibt. Er ist 2016 in Helsinki angesiedelt, an der Schnittstelle zwischen Ost und West. Hauptfigur ist die aus ärmlichen ukrainischen Verhältnissen stammende Olenka, die zunächst als Model und als Spenderin von Eizellen arbeitet und dann selbst Frauen als Leihmütter rekrutiert, was mit einem Todesfall endet. Danach flieht sie nach Finnland, wo sie sich als unscheinbare Putzfrau durchschlägt, bis sie in einem Park eine Frau aus ihrer Vergangenheit trifft, deren Rache sie fürchtet. Gemeinsam beobachten sie zwei Kinder, deren Geschichte mit ihrer eigenen verbunden ist ... - Oksanen untersucht realitätsnah die Folgen dieser Leihmutterpraxis vor dem Hintergrund einer korrupten Gesellschaft, in der das Neuerfinden von Biografien eine Frage von Geld und Beziehungen ist. This is the first book I’ve read by this Finnish writer. From the beginning, I felt disoriented because the narrative jumps around in time and place and because information is withheld.

The novel begins in Finland in 2016. Olenka, a cleaning lady in Helsinki, sits on a park bench and is joined by Daria, a woman whose life Olenka ruined and who also ruined Olenka’s life. As she tries to determine Daria’s intentions, she recalls her life in post-Soviet Ukraine. In 2006, returning to Ukraine after failing to succeed as a fashion model in Paris, Olenka sold her eggs to a fertility agency. Subsequently she became a coordinator for that agency; she matched potential egg donors to would-be parents. Daria was one of her recruits. Slowly the reader learns what happened to bring an end to Olenka’s career and forced her into a life in hiding in Finland.

Much of the time, I was uncertain about what happened in the past and what is actually happening in the present. Olenka, the narrator, doesn’t give complete explanations and so keeps the reader in suspense. She does see Daria’s arrival as a threat; she thinks she is in mortal danger from a number of sources, including a man whom she repeatedly addresses as “you.” (His identity is not given until almost midway through the novel.) Who could be chasing her and why is not revealed for the longest time. Potential readers should be forewarned that not all questions will be answered. The ending in particular may leave readers unsatisfied.

Olenka is an interesting character who is both victim and villain. I found my feelings about her changing more than once. She is determined to escape the subsistence life her mother has and does whatever is necessary to do so. She certainly manipulates others to achieve what she wants, but often she just does what she has to do to survive. One message of the novel seems to be that one can rarely escape one’s past: one of Olenka’s actions as a child has repercussions that would be impossible to foresee.

The plight of women in an unstable society is emphasized. Upon her return to Ukraine, Olenka’s options for a job focus on her body: she can be a model, escort, mail-order bride, surrogate, or egg donor.

The title refers to a park Olenka and Daria visit, but it also refers to the international market of egg donation which is shown to be the equivalent of dog breeding. Wealthy clients have exacting specifications so donors’ backgrounds are massaged to meet those requirements. Donors are drugged to enhance egg production. Once they are no longer useful, they are left with chronic and terminal illnesses. And “there were plenty of mentally disturbed donors.” Both clients and donors are exploited.

The novel references several events in recent Ukrainian history. The 2014 Maidan Revolution is mentioned. Olenka’s family lives in Snizhne in the Donbas, in rebel-held eastern Ukraine, so insight is given into life there: “According to my mother, the Donetsk People’s Republic had taken some people’s homes while offering others a path to riches because the refugees had left behind so much wealth. Some joined the separatist forces voluntarily, while others were press-ganged, and deserters were shot. Some joined because otherwise their homes and possessions would be confiscated, and their loved ones would be left destitute.” The downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 is referenced: “it later turned out that the Russian crew who transported the missile that brought down the Malaysian aircraft had driven their vehicles through Snizhne in broad daylight.” Throughout the book, life in Ukraine is constantly contrasted unfavourably with life in Finland; for instance, Olenka mentions being able to drink water “straight from the faucet without any complicated water purification system” in Finland and dreams of building her family a new house in Ukraine “with a water pump and a bathroom.”
This book will appeal to readers who enjoy slow-burning suspense and who are comfortable being left in an almost-constant state of confusion. I enjoyed it for its glimpses of life in Ukraine after independence. The Donbas region of Ukraine is often mentioned in the news about the Russo-Ukrainian War, so descriptions of life in that area are enlightening.

Inhalt
2006 ist Olenka als aufstrebendes Model in Paris gescheitert und sie lebt wieder bei Mutter und Tante in einem kleinen Dorf in der Oblast Mykolajiw im Süden der Ukraine. Sie fühlt sich verantwortlich und braucht Geld, um für die beiden Frauen zu sorgen. Durch Zufall entdeckt sie eine Anzeige und nach einem Vorstellungsgespräch erhält sie den Job. Sie macht rasch Karriere. Dann verliebt sie sich zur falschen Zeit in den falschen Mann. Sie muss untertauchen, beginnt in Helsinki ein neues Leben, doch 2016 holt sie ihre Vergangenheit ein und jetzt geht es um mehr, als nur um ihr eigenes Leben.

Thema und Genre
In diesem Roman geht es um die Ausbeutung junger Frauen aus ärmsten Verhältnissen, die auf eine bessere Zukunft hoffen. Skrupellose Organisationen im eigenen Land, hier geht es konkret um die Ukraine, werben die Frauen als Leihmütter und Eizellenspenderinnen für reiche kinderlose Ehepaare aus Ost und West an. Es sind international tätige, weit verzweigte und sehr lukrative Geschäftszweige. Wichtige Themen sind Politik, Wirtschaft, Kinderwunsch und moderne Medizin, die ukrainische Mafia, die Familie, und prägende Ereignisse in der Vergangenheit.

Charaktere
Olenka ist zielstrebig, hartnäckig, übernimmt die Verantwortung, ihre Mutter und Tante zu unterstützen. In ihrer Tätigkeit muss sie skrupellos handeln, macht Fehler, trifft falsche Entscheidungen, doch man fühlt und hofft mit ihr. Es sind unterschiedliche Figuren, denen wir in diesem Roman begegnen, authentisch bis ins Detail, und ihre Handlungen sind nachvollziehbar.

Handlung und Schreibstil
Die aktuellen Ereignisse finden im Jahr 2016 statt und beginnen auf einer Parkbank in Helsinki. Geschildert werden sie von der Ich-Erzählerin Olenka. Gleichzeitig unterbricht Olenka diesen Handlungsstrang immer wieder und erzählt in Gedanken ihre eigene Geschichte, ihre Kindheit, die Geschichte ihrer Familie. Diese Abschnitte, ergänzt durch Schilderungen von besonders prägenden Erlebnissen und Situationen, verlaufen nicht chronologisch, sondern ergeben sich aus einem Stichwort, einer spontanen Erinnerung in der Gegenwart, die ihre Gedanken spontan zurück in die Vergangenheit führen, zu dem Mann, den sie immer noch liebt und auf dessen Verständnis sie immer noch hofft. Diese Art des Erzählens, die Stück um Stück, Detail um Detail mehr von den Zusammenhängen aufdeckt, garantiert in Verbindung mit den Themen eines Kriminalromans ein sehr spannenden Leseerlebnis. Die Autorin schreibt schonungslos und offen, klagt jedoch nicht an, sondern folgt ihren Figuren mit Empathie, die sich auf uns Lesende überträgt.

Fazit
Dieser Roman, erschienen im Jahr 2019, überzeugt durch fundierte, kenntnisreiche Einblicke in die Situation in der Ukraine und erhält durch die heutige Situation zusätzliche Aktualität. Eine besondere Form des Erzählens, authentische, nachvollziehbar handelnde Figuren, eine facettenreichen Sprache von poetisch, einfühlsam, bis rasant und packend, und brisante Themen ergeben eine eindringliche, sehr spannende Geschichte.
