This book is great for young readers just starting to read biographies. This would also be a useful resource for a young reader who may be doing a project on MLK. The information is detailed but simple enough for the younger audience to comprehend. It does not only give information but explains the information further. For an example: "Dr. King decided to become a minister. A minister is someone who teaches people about God." It includes all the very important and meaningful information on Dr. King's life and also about the Civil Rights Movement. The big message in this book is to stand up for what you believe in and never discriminate against someone unfairly. ( )

I enjoyed this book for several reasons. The main idea of the book is to inform readers about the life of Martin Luther King Jr and his impact on society. The sentences in the book are simple and not too wordy, which makes it a great book for beginning or struggling readers. The vocabulary is appropriate for first and second graders especially because the book defines several words in the text. For example, page 18 says “People marched to let everyone know they wanted unfair laws changed. A law is a rule that people have to follow”. This helps enhance reader vocabulary as well as clarifies information presented in the text. The level of details given by the book are appropriate for young readers, who are the target audience. The photos in the book enhance the biography because they provide readers with a visual of the events and people that were important in King’s life. For example, page 10 shows Martin, his wife and their children. On page 19 there is a photo of King leading a march. These photos help the reader visualize the events explained by the text. The captions included with each photo also make it easier for the reader to understand what is happening. I enjoyed that the book presented the struggled Martin Luther King endured as well as the successes he had in his life. This gives readers a full picture of the good and bad in his life instead of a one-sided picture. Lastly, I enjoyed the timeline and glossary included at the end of the book. The timeline allows for a quick summary of the book for readers and allows them to focus on the key events discussed in the book. The glossary serves as a reference for readers if they forget what a word means, which is perfect for young readers. ( )

I found this to be very informative and interesting to read. The main idea of this book is Martin Luther King Jr. and his life events from birth to death. I enjoyed the real pictures of him and his family. I also enjoyed the pictures of his marches and speeches. The book captures the important events that Martin Luther King Jr. has taken part of and created in our history. The book provides information of the events. For example, “Martin went to see the president Lyndon Johnson. He asked the president to change the laws that were unfair to African Americans” (p.20). The book also had captions for each picture. I liked how the addition of captions furthering the understanding and information given about Martin. On the same page as the quote above the caption states, “Martin and other black leaders meet with President Johnson in the White House” (p.20). The book also throws in fast facts periodically that add more information. One of my favorite things is the time line from birth to death at the end of the book. You can see how much someone has accomplished in a matter of forty years. ( )

This was an account of the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the issues that he faced. It also discussed some of the strides he made in the Civil Rights Movement.

I am intrigued by history such as this so this book was a good read for me. I really enjoyed this book and especially reading it on a child's level.

To continue learning from this book in the classroom, I would give the students an example of segregation by seperating the class in to the groups that would have gone to school together before segregation was outlawed. I would also help them to find an issue that they may feel passionate about and have them petition Congress for a change they may like to see made. We would right letters to our Congressman and follow-up by watching the news and asking for a responding letter.

I enjoy the Rookie Biography series because the books are written at a level that my students can read and understand.
I use this book during civics when we look at certain people that made a difference in the world.
