Mending Life is a beautifully illustrated, practical tool kit for repairing the clothes and belongings we love. It is also an exploration of how mending can be a gently healing practice in our daily lives and a small act of rebellion in a world where many things are discarded without thought. Mending Life encourages us to cherish our things by repairing them rather than discarding them. It also encourages us to change our consumption habits so that with small mends here and there, we extend the life of our garments and other household items. This handbook is for beginners but also offers more advanced techniques to those with some experience in mending. You'll learn basic techniques such as patching, but will have options to take it a step further with decorative sashiko stitching; you'll also learn how to darn socks and mend sweaters, as well as things like a tear in a bedsheet or down jacket. And along the way, the authors share heartfelt stories about the powerful act of mending, which strengthens not only the object we are repairing, but ourselves as well. Vibrant, full-color illustrations are woven throughout the handbook. Mending Life is a timeless, practical guide to cherishing and caring for our belongings.… (meer)

Of the various mending books I have read in the past few years, this is the clearest for a beginner. The pictures are well done, and the directions are clear and complete. They are also kept fairly general. You are not expected to go out and create the same hole the author had to deal with.

This book makes somewhat less decorative mends than some of the others. While pointing out the possibilities of colour and decorative stitching, this is not the main point of the book. ( )

First of all I must say that the illustrations in this book are absolutely delightful. They set the mood for the book. The authors mention that they were in high school in the early 2000s, but they are truly old souls, both in their writing voices and in their world view. While they refer to some Eastern religions, a mending life also fits into the Christian view of intrinsic value and restoration.

This book is as much about philosophy and a way of life as it is an instruction manual. The authors give step-by-step instructions for a variety of ways to mend different types of fabrics with different uses. The instructions seem clear, but I have not as of yet attempted to put them into use. I would recommend this book to young and senior adults, and everyone in-between. I am grateful to have received a copy from Sasquatch Books via NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion. I was under no obligation to give a positive review and received no monetary compensation. I received an ARC of this book to read through NetGalley in exchange for a fair review. Mending Life a Handbook for Repairing Clothes and Hearts by Nina and Sonya Montenegro is a lovely collection of thoughtful heartwarming essays and instructions on repairing clothing and hearts. With clear and concise instructions, beautiful illustrations and lots of practical advise this is one book you will want to keep on hand for future reference. Topics discussed include Patching, Darning, Sashiko Stitching, button sewing, hemming and more to keep your clothes in tip-top condition. The book is a wonderful combination of practical and beautiful, perfect for those who are new to mending and those who want to try new techniques. I highly recommend it.
