Jennifer Sylvester made her deal with the devil . . . and now they're engaged! But all is not well in Green Valley. A chicken choker is on the loose, 61 dead birds most "fowl" need plucking, and no time remains for Jennifer and her devilish fiancé. Desperate to find a spare moment together, Jenn and Cletus's attempts to reconnect are thwarted by one seemingly coincidental disaster after another. It's not long before Cletus and Jenn see a pattern emerge and the truth becomes clear. Sabotage! Will an undercover mission unmask the culprit? Or are these love-birds totally plucked? 'Engagement and Espionage' is the first book in the Solving for Pie: Cletus and Jenn Mysteries series, is a full-length cozy mystery, and is a spin-off of Penny Reid's Winston Brothers series. This novel is best read after 'Beard Science,' Winston Brothers #3.… (meer)

I like Cletus and Jennifer A LOT but it didn't feel like a mystery at all neither did it feel like it was about them mainly.
I liked it but not as much as I thought I would ( )

Is it possible to get enough Jenn and Cletus Winston? The answer would be no. I was so, so happy when I heard there would be more Green Valley books, and mysteries!!! Cletus is working on proposing to Jenn (in a perfectly Cletus-like way) and Jenn is still working on standing up to her mother while working way too many hours at the bakery. In the meantime, something is happening to her suppliers around Green Valley. Can she and Cletus solve the mystery of the chickens and the cows and the county fair before it’s too late?

This was so much fun, the perfect mix of mystery, family drama, petty small-town spats, romance issues and of course Winston brothers. Can we ever have too much Winston brothers at home just hanging out? This particular book had me devastated in the scene where Cletus and Jenn staged their fake breakup over a banjo and then laughing at Penny managing to inject bassoon jokes into the mix. Because, of course. I love getting to spend more time in Green Valley as out of all of Penny Reid’s books, this is my very favorite series. Glad there will be more Cletus and Jenn mysteries to come!

Please excuse typos/name misspellings. Entered on screen reader. ( )

Full review to come. These are just some thoughts I'm gathering.
May contain spoilers from the Winston brothers series.

The story is a continuation of Cletus and Jenn from the Winston brother series.

I enjoyed their story in that series and I know lots of fans were clambering for more of this couple and I could understand why.
My issue is that at the time of release, then first read you may feel you want more of a couple you read about but .... Sometimes I feel by the time the author writes more the ship has sailed.
As a reader you can get invested in a story, a series and a couple but after they get their HEA you move on to the next book or series and sometimes it doesn't work for me to go back and read more of the original couple.
Basically I've lost interest.

Cletus and Jenn were left in their book as firmly a couple, he had proposed and she said yes but they weren't officially engaged and in fact Jenn moved into to Claire's old house to gain her independence as a person free from the constraints of her parents so although they were a couple much was left unresolved.
They reached their HEA in the background of other couples books as the series dealt with the other brothers.

My other issue with the book was the weird timeline thing the author did.

In the Winston series we saw all the brothers get their HEA and in the last book we had a satisfying epilogue with them all having kids or pregnancy or living happily ever after.
In this book the timeline goes back to just after Cletus and Jenn's book so Billy is still working loads at the Mill and becoming increasingly involved in politics and more importantly not with Claire.
And Jenn and her brother Isaac are still unresolved in their relationship.
Her mother has just split from her father and things that happened to her have obviously not occured yet.
The author gets around this by keeping those issues in the background and only small comments are made that elude to the previous series.

Maybe when this series is completed it will all fit together but at the moment it bothered me, I didn't want mostly for Billy going back to pinning over Claire, not that he is but the thought is here if their issues are back to square one.

I was also concerned that as Cletus and Jenn were a much loved couple by fans that this book would feel like trying a bit to hard to make them funny and special.

To be honest I was a bit bored.
Their relationship needs work and as soon as they come close to broaching it the mystery side of the story came back in and i wasn't invested enough in the mystery.

It is well written and as usual with PR books I need to read some parts carefully and even Google a few things I'm unfamiliar with.
I think it was just a bit slow for me it does really get going at around 60% and then it's really good but it was just ages before I was invested.

No intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine.
No cheating.
Dual POV. ( )

Love Penny Reid's books and love Cletus and Jenn, so this cozy mystery is just my cup of tea. Zany but engaging with typical Cletus behavior (he really is the best), this book is just lots of fun. The mystery is a nice dual track with the continuation of the romance. The scenes with Cletus trying to decide on an engagement ring made me laugh out loud as I pictured Jenn's face when he so seriously tried to find the right one for her.
Nice to visit the Winstons and Green Valley again with the addition of the mystery of who is trying to sabotage Jenn's business. Can't wait for the next book. ( )

It's the Winston brothers, vs chicken killing, milk depriving, bee burning maniacs ! Cute adorable Cletus and Jenn struggle to get that lovin' feeling dealing with family business dramas. I can't help but love this family. Another fantastic addition to the series ( )
