From the reviews and stars people left for this book, they and I, clearly did not read the same story. There are so many ways this book disappointed me.
I’ll list the things that didn’t work for me.
1) Let’s start with the Alpha/omega trope. The mention of this hints at a paranormal/fantasy. But no. This is a regular contemporary MM without anything paranormal except for calling them Alpha/omega, knotting during sex and having a baby. Nothing appears in the story’s background about the type of paranormal world they live in or any special abilities. There was no world building whatsoever. The A/o stuff struck me more like a desire to insert some kink to draw the reader’s attention. There is nothing Alternate Universe about this to separate it from our mundane world. And as for the mpreg, there’s no background to make it unique either. At the end, the story morphs from MM to MF. Tyler even nurses the baby in the last chapter, which makes me wonder if this book was originally meant to be MF, and the author just modified it. I think the story would’ve been much better without the Alpha/omega and mpreg ideas. I would’ve also liked to have seen them adopt the boy the two men met at the hospital instead of the mpreg.
2) Told in first person by Tyler and Braden, the book was about 75% inner monologue. They told and described what they thought, saw, and did. I wasn’t pulled into the plot because the feelings weren’t there. I was told what happened, rather than making me feel. Every few pages my mind would drift and I’d have to put the book down to read later. I shouldn’t get bored in a novella like that.
3) Tyler too quickly got over his broken heart. I didn't find it believable.
4) The sentences and paragraphs didn’t always flow together well. It was as if an idea was introduced then the author jumped to another subject without fully completing the current idea.
5) The cover is important to a book and is like the presentation to a good meal. From the look of the cover, I expected an older man with a younger man. Braden looks like he’s in his thirties, Tyler in his twenties. But no, they are close in age. The cover models do not represent the characters.
I did think the author did a good job of making the characters’ voices sound different in the beginning. However, as the story progressed, the more Tyler sounded like Braden.
Overall, the plot of the story was good if it was written as a non-paranormal MM romance, especially since there really isn’t anything that makes this book a paranormal except the mention of knotting and having a baby. With the many items I found lacking in this story, the book could be greatly improved. However, many readers enjoyed this book. I can honestly say I did not. I wouldn’t recommend Snickerdoodle Sweetie to anyone. I give this 2 Stars.
