During her exploratory sojourns to Antarctica, Lucy Jane Bledsoe witnessed many amazing sights, such as mummified seals, and picked up more than a few survival tactics; for example, if you should find yourself in danger of falling into a cravasse, you should stretch out your body to avoid dropping farther. Part memoir, part survival tips, part curiosities, Lucy Jane Bledsoe's book lets readers vicariously experience the author's adventures while on exploration in Antarctica. Annotation. This non-fictional book tells the story of the authors trip and journey to Antarctica, but at the same time it offers a lot of factual information about Antarctica. Some of this information includes survival tips if you plan on staying there, where to look for wildlife and how to identify the different wildlife, and other features of the frozen desert. On almost every page of the book are pictures that the author took herself while on her trip, along with little short stories of the history of Antarctica. I think this book would be great for a 4th or 5th grade classroom and can be used in helping students learn about the different parts of the world and grow their interest in something specific. Maybe a student loves penguins, this book offers some information about penguins that the student might now know yet. The book is 101 pages long.

A wonderful non-fiction book for kids! The formatting was great, the tidbits were interesting and the author seemed to intuit the types of questions kids were bound to ask. Brilliant! ( )

This smorgasbord of information is chopped up into manageable chunks. Lucy Bledsoe gives her personal accounts of adventures she's had in Antarctica interspersed with scientific, biographical, and historical facts. A glossary is included but no index or source list making this book so-so for reports, but excellent for browsing. Recommended for kids who like to read about true adventures.

Great book! It really has everything you need to know about Antarctica. I also like that it has a personal story intertwined with the facts which are everything from how to build a snow shelter to the Dark Sector. ( )
