While it is a good book and well written, it makes hard reading. The suffering of the armies comes through all too clearly. That both sides persisted is remarkable and speaks to just what human beings are capable of enduring. ( ) 2375 Passchendaele: The Tragic Victory of 1917, by Philip Warner (read 4 Apr 1991) This book is not very profound but it tells the awful story--he quotes liberally from the accounts of others. It is over five years since I read Lyn MacDonald's book on this battle and I was horrified anew by this book. It speaks very highly of the British soldier, and not very well of Haig. I was especially intrigued by Warner's last chapter: "Visiting the Battlefield Today." It shows there are guidebooks and tours. I would love to spend a couple weeks in Belgium and France touring those battlefields! This has been a good renewal of my knowledge of the battle. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
