Trex or Treat is the story of Josh Harris a professor, and Bradley ‘Trex’ Trexler, a doctoral student who’s moving in across the street. This is told in third person from Josh’s pov.

October is almost here and I’m ready for some non-horror Halloween stories. I decided to start my reading with this book. Since it’s a short story, it’s a fast read.

Josh is divorced, raising his son alone and doesn’t have time for a relationship, even though he’s interested in Trex. Trex is guardian of his half-brother and is interested in Josh so he concocts a plan to get to know Josh better.

I liked the premise of this story, but had one major dislike. During the haunted house, Trex gives Josh a private tour of the ‘spooky kitchen.’ I’ll put this part behind a spoiler tag There he molests Josh while the kids are listening in. Trex tells Josh to make creeped out sounds because the kids are listening and Josh is trying not to moan. The house is also filled with adults in the living room. This is a bit exhibitionistic, but with adults, it’s not so bad. I'd imagine most parents if they knew their kids were listening in, would likely become uncomfortable and stop fooling around. In this case both men seemed to get off on the kids and adults listening in, and that’s really creepy and not in the spooky way. I’ve enjoyed this author’s stories, but I don’t understand why she thought that involving kids in this scene was necessary. Instead, it came across as sick and perverse. It ruined what was a fun story for me.

Trex or Treat is a cute, quick read, but with the one major issue of that specific scene. I give this book, 3 Stars.
