The reviewer for the Association of Jewish Libraries Newsletter wrote about this work: [It is] a popular, literate, and detailed overview of the life, thought, activities, and world of Maimonides, followed by copious citations from his diverse writings, logically arranged according to theme and topic. Minkin obviously holds the subject of the volume in high esteem and paints a glowing portrait of Maimonides' contribution to Jewish life and scholarship. . .The introduction, provided by Arthur Hertzberg, summarizing the highlights of the 1985 UNESCO conference commemorating the eight hundred-fiftieth anniversary of Maimonides' birth, provides a fascinating description of how a number of scholars from diverse cultures each attempts to claim Rambam as one of their own.
