Germany's greatest Renaissance artist   Though most famous for his engravings, Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) was also a master painter and draftsman whose work exemplifies the spirit of German art. Dürer's importance in the German High Renaissance was such that he can be considered to embody the movement entirely. His visits to Italy (where he studied most notably with Giovanni Bellini) had a profound effect on his artistic development and enabled him to combine both German and Italian influences in his work. In his later life, Dürer's passion for knowledge and progress led him to research and write on the subjects of art theory and mathematics, making him not only the greatest Northern European artist of his time, but also one of its leading thinkers. This overview of Dürer's entire oeuvre--covering his oil, tempera, and watercolor paintings, copper and wood engravings, and his drawings and sketches--is the perfect introduction to his work.   About the Series: Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions… (meer)

Vienna is one of the Dürer capitals of the world where it is quite easy to hop into a museum and see multiple Dürers hanging on the wall (or copies thereof, the Albertina is notorious for showing copies, after having nearly ruined the hare by mercilessly pimping it out). Especially in comparison to the huge canvasses of later times, the paintings of Dürer look and are tiny. So this Taschen A4 introduction shows many works close to their actual size (the tiny picture of the hare being a notable exception).

Dürer's paintings are very well represented, his prints less so - as is the case with the Dürers on exhibit in the museums. I'll have to track down editions of his prints too. The Taschen book offers a fine introduction to his life, his work and the era at an unbeatable price (while KHM offers it at a reduced price of 10 EUR, I bought mine at the annual Taschen sales for 5 EUR). Se eu já gostava de Dürer, fiquei absolutamente fascinada depois de ver seu auto-retrato exposto no Louvre.

A short illustrated guide to one of the art superstars of the early 1500s. Lots of great pictures with short interpretations.
