The final book in the Betwixt & Between trilogy is filled with humor and action. Defiance Dane has managed to return her grandmother from the dead but still really wants to know who murdered her in the first place. Defiance is also the target of someone who wants her because she's a charmling. And she is concerned about her relationship with her basement neighbor who is a hottie wolf.

Throw in a best friend who believes she's psychic and who wants Defiance to conduct a seance and who seems to be developing an ability to may deadly poisons and you have a lot of confusion going on.

This story had a lot of characters who were all fascinating people and who all had issues that kept pulling Defiance in different directions. I was especially fond of the three-year-old ghost boy from Salem's pilgrim past.

I enjoyed the quirky humor which mixed nicely with someone wanting Defiance dead and the tension that brought to the story.

While this book wouldn't stand alone, it was a great conclusion for those who have read the first three books in the series. ( )

Darynda never lets me down. We've got memes, snark, and lots of lovin'. I even learned a new word. Wineaholism. I love when I can learn something while reading for enjoyment.😉 ( )

(Sort of a) Paradox: I dislike, in general, self-published books, but there are a few authors I love enough to find myself unable to stay away from them. Ilona Andrews is one example, and Darynda Jones another.

From what I gather, this self published series is part of a larger effort by several authors to publish books whose main characters are over 40 and still living la vida loca. Or something like that. Regardless, I picked up the series because, like Chloe Neil, Jones can write the snark and the humor and sometimes, with a very few authors, that’s enough.

So, in spite of the self-published-ness of the series, I look forward to each one. They’re unfettered by anything resembling an editor’s reins, which, in a paranormal story is pretty damn unfettered, but the grammar is polished and copy-edited, which goes a long way. Given the general joie de vivre Jones’ characters usually display, the MC could as easily be 30, 40 or 50, so while the story might be meant for ‘mature’ (I hate that word when applied to my gender) women, the story would resonate with anyone.

It was a fun, flirty, fast read, easily enjoyed on a cold winter’s holiday before the slog back to working on-site begins again tomorrow. ( )

Now that we have a 2nd charmed one, I betting that sometime soon in the book series we'll wind up with another. 3 charmed ones to protect witches and fight off the warlocks. I'm hoping that the next book tackles the warlock in Poughkeepsie. Less then one month before it's supposed to be released. ( )
