I enjoyed the strong female characters but the plot had something lacking I think. ( ) Lady Violet leads Athena's Retreat, a group of women in regency (early Victorian?) Britain who tinker with assorted STEM-y subjects. There's some dangerous thing going on (I think a sort of labor uprising?) and Arthur is brought in to be Violet's bodyguard. Romance. I couldn't really get into this one. I'd expected it to prominently feature science/chemistry, but it doesn't, really. The women of Athena's Retreat (of which there are many--I really struggled to tell them apart and pretty definitely couldn't list all of them now, having just finished) just continually cause cutesy little explosions, and nobody really comes off as especially competent. The writing style also didn't really work for me. I think that it may have been a little too posh/overly historic-sounding for me to get into, and I found the book a bit disjointed. I kept putting this one down and have finally finished it, but it unfortunately wasn't my favorite. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

"What is a lady's formula for love? Bring together one brilliant noblewoman and an enigmatic bodyguard. Mix in a measure of danger and attraction. Heat over the warmth of humor and friendship, and the result is more than simple chemistry--it's elemental. Lady Violet Hughes is keeping secrets. First, she founded London's first social club for ladies to provide sanctuary for England's most brilliant female scientists. Second, she is using her genius on a clandestine mission for the Crown. But the biggest secret of all? Her feelings for protection officer Arthur Kneland. The most guarded of men, Kneland learned the hard way to put duty first. But the more time spent in the company of Violet and the eccentric club members, the more his best intentions go up in flames. Literally. When a shadowy threat infiltrates Violet's laboratories, endangering her life and her work, scientist and bodyguard will find all their theories put to the test--and learn that the most important discoveries are those of the heart"-- Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
