There is something about this book that I just can't get into. I believe this is partially due to the fact that this book is a little older and is not as relatable as other math fiction that I have read. The story itself is just lackluster. It is about campers who are competing to elect a mascot for the end of the camp season. Two friends go against each other campaigning for the position. There is some math, but not enough to use in a classroom setting. I also noticed that all of the children in the story are white. The book does have a boy in a wheelchair, which I can appreciate, but not seeing anyone other than one race is weird. ( ) This is a great example of realistic fiction. The story centers around a group of kids at a summer camp which most kids have experienced or want to experience in the future, so they can relate to the story. The characters are just like normal kids, and everything that happens to them is believable. Kids can learn that this story didn't really take place, but could have. The Grizzly Gazette is a great book for teaching graphing. The book is all about graphs and gives examples of graphs throughout the books. The book also has wonderful pictures so students can really see what graph they are talking about and it also gives them a great visual. I think this is a great math read aloud and lesson to do for students 3rd and 4th grade. website-www.stuartjmurphy.com- This is another great website. The site is full of information, activities, and games. It's the last week of Camp Grizzly, and the campers are preparing to elect a mascot. Each day the Grizzly Gazette takes a poll to see who has the biggest percentage of the vote so far. Is it Sophie? Is it Daniel? Or could it be Corey, the new entry in the race? Corey's determined to do her best. But she's got to make up for lost time. Can she win out over Daniel and Sophie? No one will know for sure until the last vote is counted! A lively story about summer camp fun will help young readers understand both percentage and voting!
