Misc. Illustrations and photos depict the story of six year old Ruby Bridges, a black child, who on November 14, 1960, bravely, stoically was escourted by federal marshals to enter the the William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans, LA. In doing so, she became the poster child for integration of schools and the very beginning of acclimation into a white school by a young black child thus beginning the desegregation of public education in New Orleans.

This wonderful book is written sixty years later as a testimony of overcoming bigotry and hatred by bravely walking up the steps to the school as she was surrounded by white adults who threw racial slurs and the ugly biogotry experienced by an innocent child merely trying to get what was her right-- an education!!!

This is the struggle to overcome hatred and to witness one step after another, head held high in the struggle for justice. The bravey of this child was a miracle. White parents refused to have their children attend school with Ruby. Her very kind and dedicated white teacher Barbara Henry was forever in awe of the courage of young Ruby. Not only did Barbara Henry teach Ruby every day, but she sat with her as together they ate lunch.

Years later, in 1914, a statue was unvieled at the William Frantz Elementary School. Barbara Henry was in attendance with Ruby during the ceremony that day as together these two brave, steadfast individuals became a team to overcome hatred and to stand steadfast in the rigtht for liberty and justice.

The famous Norman Rockwell painting The Problem We All Live with is used as the cover for this incredible story.

I was ten years old when this historical event occured. And, while it is true that we've come a long way, it is also true that there are still many, many steps to walk.

The book is a true story about Ruby Bridges who was the first black student to integrate into an all white elementary school in New Orleans. The book includes real historical images that portray the reality of racism and her story. The book communicates the challenges she endured and encourages the readers to not be afraid and stay united. This children's book would be a great read aloud for 2nd to 5th graders to bring up the topic of racism. ( )

Good, inspirational words charging the kids of today with the challenge to change their world. I was looking for something more autobiographical and found this, so it didn’t quite fit the bill, but it’s worth the read nonetheless. ( )

About once every 10 years, Ruby Bridges writes a short book about her personal experience in 1960, when she was one of four blacks selected by the courts to attend an all white school in New Orleans. This recently published book features a small portion of Norman Rockwell's iconic painting of Ruby on her way to school. The book is a series of photographs from then and now, asking for more tolerance and understanding. For me, the recognition of her white teacher was the most moving part of the short memoir and call to action. ( )
