This book is the first reader in the series about bugs by Theodor Seuss Geisel honor winner Jonathan Fenske. The rhyming text introduces a happy scene of a bug on a log until there is a frog. The fog is an unexpected characteristic that changes the story and leaves the reader wondering if the frog ate the bug. Although the sounds affirm this notion, the fourth spread reveals a funny ending.
Colorful black outlined illustrations and large typeface make this book an excellent read for those progressing from simple words to sentence reading with lots of repetition. It is an excellent addition to a reader collection. This could still entice a 2nd grader at a lower reading level.

The bug in the bog is sitting on a log peaceably ... but when a hungry frog comes along, how will the bug fare?

This is a super fun take on the early reader dilemma -- the words have to be simple but the story should still be compelling and interesting. This book manages that by having a silly story and a bit of suspense while the fog rolls in, covering the bug and the frog from the reader's view in the illustrations. ( )
