"New York cop Joe Krueger is about to arrest a notorious drug pusher when his life changes forever. He witnesses a bomb tear through one of the city's biggest Jewish museums, leaving dozens dead. In the aftermath, the case takes an even more horrific turn: footage from the scene suggests that the bomber is Joe's own grandfather, infamous Nazi General Wolfgang Kruger, who died 70 years ago. With time running out until the next attack, Joe Krueger is forced to confront his family's monstrous past. Piecing the clues together, he discovers that his grandfather had been ordered to recover the True Cross for the Third Reich, and that modern-day neo-Nazis are racing to complete his mission. Armed with little more than a burning desire to expose this plot, Joe travels across Europe and the Holy Land fighting to stop these men and their plan to tip the globe into another world war."--Back cover.… (meer)

A pot-boiler that combines contemporary neo-Nazis, supposedly dead Nazis, and just plain nasty people. Mix in wild car rides, lots of fights and many dead "bad guys" along with personal betrayals and one sort of has an idea of what's in store. Travels to Europe and the Holy Land as well as anchored in New York City, the action does indeed sweep the world.

Family secrets are exposed and new friendships formed. Maybe a love interest? NY detective Joseph Krueger becomes intimately involved in Jewish museum bombings when he realises that his long dead German General grandfather is the suspected bomber. How did a man who died 70 years ago be alive in New York? Hence, the journey begins.

Add in cryogenics, secret societies, along with unbalanced uber-wealthy individuals and there is a mixture that, at times, is hard to follow and connect the pieces. Sometimes an overly complicated narrative confuses rather than adds! Nonetheless, for a first novel, a solid intorduction. As the main characters live to fight another day, one can suspect that additional volumes will follow. ( )

This debut thriller novel brings to mind [The Boys From Brazil] married to [The DaVinci Code]. It is not a polished novel, but it does show a lot of promise. The downside is that it is somewhat overplotted. It’s not overly long, but somehow Neo-Nazis, terrorists, the hunt for a holy artifact with mystical powers, nefarious tech moguls, family drama, and the trauma of living with a genetic deformity all manage to find a home there. It could have been streamlined a bit. The writing style is basically competent, though cliched character descriptions creep in from time to time, and the occasional British word usage, which ring odd in a tale of a NYC cop. But Mr. Whitfield writes action scenes very well. There was certainly enough excitement and interest to keep me reading quickly to the end. I will be interested to see what Mr. Whitfield comes up with next.
I was given an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. ( )
