I listened to this rather than read it, and the narrator Paula Christensen, did the most amazing job of the telling, adding so much that I doubt I would have got from reading it. Having visited Argentina and Uruguay several times, I found the descriptions of life so evocative and relatable. The historical thread left me with a desire to read more about this shameful period in Argentina's history. The romantic aspect was bearable within the context of the main narrative. I look forward to more from this author. Paloma returns to her birth country with her mother and father, an ambassador to Argentina. I knew nothing about Argentina's political history before reading this book other than Evita. The story moves between the 1970's and the 1990's. Great story as she discovers the injustice done to her country and her family. The author tells a great story that was compelling and so interesting. She got my attention. Paloma, the daughter of Santiago, an Argentine diplomat, is instantly intrigued when she meets a person from her father's past. The stranger suggests that her father's past is more heroic than she could have none. When the family travels to Argentina, Paloma is determined to uncover more of the story. There, she meets Franco, an activist member who are composed of children of the disappeared. Alternating with the past, things are heating up politically. Santiago, a university student, in unsure what to do when people around him begin to disappear. I knew very little about Argentina and the Dirty War before reading this novel. I found this book well paced, fascinating, and hard to put down. While Santiago's story was more compelling, the modern day story served to unite the generations and explain the past. Overall, 4 out of 5 stars. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
"New York, 1998. Santiago Larrea, a wealthy Argentine diplomat, is holding court alongside his wife, Lila, and their daughter, Paloma, a college student and budding jewelry designer, at their annual summer polo match and soiree. All seems perfect in the Larreas' world-until an unexpected party guest from Santiago's university days shakes his usually unflappable demeanor. The woman's cryptic comments spark Paloma's curiosity about her father's past, of which she knows little. When the family travels to Buenos Aires for Santiago's UN ambassadorial appointment, Paloma is determined to learn more about his life in the years leading up to the military dictatorship of 1976. With the help of a local university student, Franco Bonetti, an activist member of H.I.J.O.S-a group whose members are the children of the Desaparecidos, or the "Disappeared," men and women who were forcibly disappeared by the state during Argentina's "Dirty War"-Paloma unleashes a chain of events that not only leads her to question her family and her identity, but also puts her life in danger. In compelling fashion, On a Night of a Thousand Stars speaks to relationships, morality, and identity during a brutal period in Argentinian history, and the understanding-and redemption-people crave in the face of unspeakable tragedy"-- Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

I thought this was a really valuable book to read about a part of history that I missed (although I was alive at the time the older timeline (1973-1976 - mostly at the latter end of the period) I was too young and self-absorbed to pay attention to anything on the news and it sure as anything wasn't covered at school). I'll probably not deliberately search out another book set in this period, however if I did come across one I'd likely read it ( )
