Romance. Young Adult Fiction. Young Adult Literature. HTML:A fresh, witty rom-com romp set against the backdrop of a high-profile music competition and a riotous Indian wedding

Zurika Damani is a naturally gifted violinist with a particular love for hip hop beats. But when youre part of a big Indian family, everyone has expectations, and those certainly dont include hip hop violin. After being rejected by Juilliard, Zuri's last hope is a contest judged by a panel of top tier college scouts. The only problem? This coveted competition happens to take place during Zuris sisters extravagant wedding week. And Zuri has already been warned, repeatedly, that she is not to miss a single moment.
In the midst of the chaos, Zuris mom is in matchmaking mode with the grooms South African cousin Naveenwho just happens to be a cocky vocalist set on stealing Zuris spotlight at the scouting competition. Luckily Zuri has a crew of loud and loyal female cousins cheering her on. Now, all she has to do is to wow the judges for a top spot, evade getting caught by her parents, resist Naveens charms, and, oh yeah . . . not mess up her sister

This was quite a contrast from the book I read prior to it, The Noh Family by Grace Shim. Both are about family and the impact of relatives and customs/rituals. Where the Nohs are cold and calculating, Zuri's family members are warm to the point of smothering and overwhelming. Her dream is to become a professional violinist, and when her chance at an audition, and possibly a call-back for consideration for a full scholarship to a prime music school happens in the same week as her older sister's huge Indian wedding, her nerves are stretched to the max. Add in a relative of the groom who has her alternating between swooning and raised hackles, coupled with having to keep her clandestine plans to go to the audition from all her relatives and you have a merry romp through Indian culture and traditions. In addition to a great rom-com, readers are immersed in all the trimmings and events that go with a traditional Indian wedding. you're unlikely to understand everything associated with the event, but you'll get enough so you're following along and enjoying every minute. I received an advance copy of this book, thank you
I found this book a light and enjoyable read. Initially I thought it would be saccharin sweet and predictable. Instead, I found myself very interested in the whole Indian wedding ritual. I had no idea it was so involved. The traditions of the ceremony take on a life of their own. Zuri older sister is getting married, and every acquaintance the family has ever known is coming, included every relative. The gala event goes on for more than a week. In the misted of all of the wedding excitement, Zuri and all of her friends are starting to get college acceptance letters. Zuri is an extremely talented Violin player, and that's what she wants to pursue, more than anything else. BUT music is considered a hobby as far as her parents and relatives are concerned, Law and Medicine should be pursued first, violin, when there's time. Also at the same time as the wedding festivities is a renown music competition with a scholarship to the winner. Zuri thinks and hopes that by competing and winning, her dream would seem more honorable. She's been told not to do anything that would ruin the karma of her sister's wedding; no leaving the parties, no running off to any competitions. Of course she can't resist, and this is a romance story and therefore is a bit predictable, but the backdrop is fun and refreshing. ( )
