The book is beautifully constructed; the personalities of the three sisters shine through their narratives, and their loving, hard-working, long-widowed mother comes alive through the author’s skilful hand. By turn warm, funny and sad, the events in the girls’ young lives reveal a time when people knew their place, were mostly happy to be in it, and enjoyed a childhood of innocence and friendship to a degree that is hard to imagine today.
The lives of three young sisters who grew up in the small Welsh town of Harlech in the years before World War I make a tapestry that is a social history of a small Welsh community during the early years of the 20th century. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

During the Edwardian period, Harlech was a popular vacation spot with some upper class English families, including Robert Graves and Denys Finch-Hatton (of Out of Africa and West with the Night fame). They were drawn to the village by the beach and Royal St David's Golf Club. I found the contrast between their lives and the lives of the poor townspeople to be most interesting.
I think this book is an important piece of documentation of an era, and recommend it to anyone interested in social history. ( )
