While Clementine has attributes of Dahl’s Matilda, this story designed for the picture book crowd, seems more menacing as Clementine’s mother is taken by a dragon and her father is swept out to sea in a bottle. Clementine is left in the care of a strict aunt, but plucky Clementine discovers how to make the house invisible so the aunt can’t find it. Clementine has the house to herself, until a lion shows up. They get along peacefully and decide to make the house visible again for when Clementine’s parents return. I hope Abbot continues to write and illustrate because her bright illustrations are a delight. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
"Clementine is fed up with being under the rule of her overbearing parents. So when her mother is snatched away by dragons and her father becomes lost at sea in a bottle, she finds herself rather relieved to be alone. She outwits her dull aunt Mildred who is sent to care for her, and settles into a happy life of freedom and self-reliance. That is, until she leaves the door ajar one day and returns home to discover an unwelcome intruder . . . With its surprising plot twists and dark(ish) humour, this charming tale of an independent-minded girl and her unexpected housemate is reminiscent of Roald Dahl and Maurice Sendak, but at the same time, feels completely fresh."-- Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
