This was great -- somehow not at all what I was expecting -- I thought it would be more fantastical. Loved that the magical elements are firmly steeped Vietnamese cultural beliefs. Loved the empowering care that is at the heart of the story. Loved the food aspect, the connection to those who have passed, and the way Lark's family and friends step in to help when she has racist commentary directed her way. Well done. ( ) The Secret of the Jade Bangle is a lovely short chapter book for young people. The main character is of Vietnamese descent although thoroughly American, having been born in the United States. Her beloved Grandma Nôi has recently passed away and Anne and her siblings miss her a great deal. They each are given special gifts that had belonged to their grandmother. Anne receives her beautiful jade bangle and soon realizes that it has a secret power to make her grandmother appear to her. Grandma Nôi teaches Anne how to cook her wonderful Vietnamese dishes and gives her the strength to stand up for herself and her culture. The book is a gentle lesson in racial discrimination, perfect for young readers. It is also a reminder that the love of those who are gone remains with us always. The book is the first in a series and I am so glad that this author has decided to write more in this vein. The illustrations are equally delightful. Thank you to Linda Trinh, Annick Press and NetGalley for this ARC. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

"A charming early chapter book series that explores Vietnamese culture and identity through the eyes of the Nguyen siblings, with elements of the supernatural, spirituality, and social justice woven in. Organized and introspective nine-year-old Anne Nguyen misses her Grandma N?i, a lot. But even though Grandma N?i passed away, it doesn't mean she's disappeared. When Anne and her younger siblings Jacob and Liz are given gifts passed on to them by Grandma, Anne soon realizes that hers--a beautiful jade bangle--has a secret power. One that might just give her the strength to stand up to her ballet teacher, who treats her differently than her white classmates, and embrace her Vietnamese identity through cooking Grandma's recipes. No matter how difficult things get, Anne learns that the love of her ancestors is always with her."-- Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
