NYPD sketch artist Nate Rodriguez possesses a remarkable gift. From the smallest clues--an off-hand comment, a brief flash of fear in a victim's eyes--he is able to create an uncanny likeness of the assailant. Now Detective Terri Russo needs his help to solve a particularly shocking series of murders, perpetrated by a psychopath who enjoys drawing pictures of his crimes before committing them. Nate is being asked to enter the dark, twisted mind of a monster--to re-create a face that no one has lived to identify. But as a portrait slowly begins taking shape in Nate's mind and on the page, an electrifying game of cat and mouse reaches an unexpected new level--as a brilliant killer uses his own unique talents to turn the investigation in a terrifying new direction... A breathtakingly original novel of suspense, Jonathan Santlofer's Anatomy of Fear mixes prose and pictures to create a story that burns its way into the brain and brilliantly revitalizes the crime fiction genre.… (meer)

A police sketch artist investigates a serial killer who leaves detailed drawings at the murder scenes. As he gets closer to solving the crime, the pace noticeably quickens in a suspenseful fight for his physical and spiritual safety. ( )

When I picked up Jonathan Santlofer's book Anatomy of Fear, I could immediately see that it is different from your average thriller. As you open it your eye is drawn to the drawings that the author has interspersed throughout the story. As I read the book I realized that these drawings were integral to my understanding of the plot, as the book's main character Nate Rodriguez is a police sketch artist and his drawing ability becomes the key to solving a serial murder case. He is called into the case because the killer leaves a drawing he has done of the victim pinned to their bodies. Details of these drawings offer clues to the killer's identity, but Nate's uncanny ability to recreate a killer's face from just the scantiest of clues is what really moves the investigation along. The thrill of following along as he tries to catch the killer before more harm is done is blended with a gradual revelation about Nate's own back story and a mystery surrounding the death of his father. I got thoroughly hooked into this story almost immediately, and the ending left me wanting for more so I certainly hope that a sequel appears soon. Anyone who enjoys thrillers and/or who likes graphic novels or novels with a strong visual element should definitely pick this one up. ( )

A very different approach to the usual detective story. Nathan Rodriguez, a former cop (for 5 days), and now a sketch artist for the NYPD helps to solve serial killings where the killer leaves sketches of the crime scene. no spoilers here. ( )

554 pages, I like Santlofer!! This is a new series about a police sketch artist, the book has a lot of Santlofer's own drawings and some color which was diffrent for a novel.

I also love his other series with an art historian as the main character and she aids the police with crime solving, she is also an ex-cop. I would definatly read more in this series. ( )

A clever graphic element enlivens this solid serial-killer novel from Santolofer, a visual artist and author of three previous art-themed thrillers (The Killing Art, etc.). Nate Rodriguez, a talented NYPD police sketch artist, appears to have psychic abilities when it comes to visualizing perpetrators. When Nate sketches portraits, the drawings are reproduced in the text. Nate joins detective Terri Russo on a case in which the killer, a white supremacist who takes his deadly orders directly from God, leaves his own drawings at the crime scenes (also reproduced). Nate turns to his Puerto Rican grandmother, a santera ("a sort of neighborhood priestess"), for help. Together, they come up with drawings that point to a suspect closer to home than any of them have imagined. Plot devices include a trail of red herring clues that threaten to implicate Nate, overbearing FBI agents and a female-in-peril chase scene at the end, while the romantic relationship that develops between Nate and Terri leaves room for more to come ( )
