Gr 1–5—For the SEL [social / emotional learning] shelves, a lesson on communication, or a story on empathy, this book breaks new ground. Just as its painterly illustrative style demands that readers squint, pay attention, and peer at the pages to see better, Dot has to think anew about friendship when a boy, Albert, moves in next door. The book's rewards grow with rereadings. This book was vastly different than I expected. I rated it lower because I don't think children will like the artwork. It is decidedly impressionist in style. (kind of reminded me of Claude Monet). However, a story about grief and bereavement (or could even be incarceration) and a family member struggling with that....this book has a niche audience. The reminder to just be. That's okay to be sad. It's okay to be struggling. It's okay to not know what you need. Kids need to be told those things are okay! geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
"A young girl named Dot is overjoyed when the moving truck arrives at the house down the street, and even more excited when a boy her age steps out, offering the prospect of a new friend. But Albert looks sad, and he won't reveal why. After many attempts to cheer him up, Dot walks away defeated. That night, a balloon with a note tied to its string taps her window. Unfolding the note, Dot finds a wish that Albert has written. This is her chance to make Albert happy -- she will (creatively) grant his wishes. Though as each wish becomes harder to grant, Dot learns the powerful lesson that sometimes being a friend means waiting until the people you care about are ready to reach out.
