Enjoyed it from there on. ( ) Barbara Hambly has done a lot better than this book. A fairly shallow built world, with orders of sorcerers working for an exploitive empire and a heroine whose family history inexplicably parallels that of Elizabeth I. One of the sorcerous orders is doing something quite like the Verrakaien mages in Elizabeth Moon's Oath of Fealty and there are chthonic monsters so you know you're reading a dark fantasy. Well it's not that dark, but there sure is nothing light about it other than content. This might have been passable as a first novel, but falls very short as the 70th or even 80th something novel. This fantasy reminded me a lot of Stranger Things, in that it feels very much like it was published in an alternate 1980s. Magic, except for the magic of the Crystal Mages, is failing as the Crystal Mages destroy a conquered land to mine the substance that gives them power. A princess whose father is one of the invaders and whose mother was indigenous nobility strives to fight back, with the help of the Prometheus-like figure she rescues—a wizard who destroyed a city of fifty thousand souls. I dunno, it just felt like it had been kept in a box for forty years, but not in a bad way. (Brief mention of sexual assault.) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
"Something is amiss with the world's magic. Spells don't work the way they used to--when they work at all. Only the powers of the Crystal Mages remain as they were, powers founded on the use of the mystical element adamis, the harvesting of which has enslaved the peoples of the Twilight Lands. They need a hero. At the same time, ravenous beasts have begun to appear, legendary creatures that seem to be proof against any magic. And Clea Stylachos, granddaughter of a great sage of the Twilight people, has reason to fear that the Crystal Mages, instead of seeking to defeat these insanely destructive monsters, are attempting to weaponize them in their quest for power. Clea's only hope to save her people is a wizard who retains his power, one who will not betray her, either to the great merchant houses or to the all-entangling web of the Crystal Mages. But that wizard--Ithrazel the Cursed--wants nothing to do with saving the world, helping a hero, or unraveling the terrible secret at the heart of the Crystal Mages' plans" Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
