It follows the struggles she has as she figures out just what it is to be a captain. If she were in her early twenties it would have been much more plausible.Deze bespreking is geschreven voor LibraryThing Vroege Recensenten. This is an interesting story that I couldn't put down, listed at 156 pages so it is a short story, a quick read over a few days. Listed as for teens but I also found it a good story as an older adult. This follows Alcyon Jenkins, a 15 yr old who graduated as a starship captain and her first command aboard a starship with other teenagers as crew. They are tasked with returning a cargo stolen from a parallel earth and yet an Admiral comes aboard to supposedly chaperone the mission. This story follows that mission and the interactions of the crew as the mission goes off the rails essentially from the start. You will want to continue to follow the story in the next book as you do get invested in the story. Deze bespreking is geschreven voor LibraryThing Vroege Recensenten. I enjoyed the storyline and the world building. However the story ended so abruptly and there were some inconstancies such as the idea that alternate worlds are super secret yet everyone knows about them. The plot was compelling and left me wanting to read the next installment. Deze bespreking is geschreven voor LibraryThing Vroege Recensenten. This book read like a 1950s style outer space voyage story, with very familiar situations and stereotypical characters that did not appeal to me, unfortunately. There was some unique world building that I think has possibilities, but it didn't carry enough of those elements to hold my interest. I did finish this book and I think it might appeal to a younger audience than me, but I don't think I'll read more of this series. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
Onderdeel van de reeks(en)Captain Jenkins (1)
In the year 2260, twenty-three Alternate Earths have been discovered. Each one of them is nearly identical to our own, with one big difference: they are all inhabited by beings that went extinct on our planet long ago, or that most people think never existed at all. As big of a breakthrough as this was for science, the discovery of these other Earths quickly led to the discovery of something else: ways to smuggle things from them. That's where I come in. I, Alycon Jenkins, am the youngest woman at The Academy to ever be awarded the title of Captain. Together with my crew and my beautiful ship Lucinda, my job is to return stolen things and creatures to the place (and time) where they belong. I just wasn't expecting that crew to be composed of a bunch of rude, disrespectful teenaged boys. An obstinate First Mate, a clueless chef, a defiant doctor, a mocking pilot, and a handsome but brooding Lieutenant make for bad company as we make our first journey up among the stars. But a venomous plant, an ancient curse, and a dead body on the bridge might just make for some good team-building exercises... This first installment in Jessica Scott Romano's six-book space opera series mixes elements of science fiction and fantasy to take readers on a fun, fast-paced adventure through a galaxy filled with danger, friendship, romance, and maybe even an alien or two.
