Five Great Novels? ORLY? No, not really. I'm pretty sure the title actually means "5 early novels", from Block's first writing in the 1960s. Block has grown a lot as a writer since then. They're OK and all as light entertainment. Kind of medium-boiled noir in style, decent enough if not a patch on Chandler.

Two feature detectives, two follow con artists, and in the last a pair of newlyweds stumble on a murder. They all show that Block's moral ambiguity was in place early: none of the protagonists are really heroic, but they do the best they can. I'm a fan of Block's fluffy Bernie Rhodenbarr series and his gritty Matt Scudder books. These ones, well, meh. ( )
