This is the eighth book in Drew Hayes' Fred the Vampire Accountant series. I picked up the first book in the series because of the humorous title but continued reading the rest of the series because of the "humanity" shown by the book's main character Fred. In this book, Fred is asked to teach at a paranormal college run by the elves. There he is forced to confront cynical, non-enthusiastic students who are suspicious of him as a vampire and dismissive of the subject he will be teaching. The book includes, of course, a confrontation with his arch-enemy Quinn but the most interesting aspect of the book is how he is able to eventually win over the students taking his class. ( ) Another winner from my favorite series that I just devoured! Fred is so endearing in his awkwardness and earnestness. The suspense of how he will manage to literally unentangle himself and his friends from near death kept me reading until the end, with a few major plot twists/major revelations at the end. Fred survived this experience at a paranormal college and we know that he's a "very useful pawn" being played by greater forces who wish to keep him alive to destroy other chess pieces. I'm liking that Fred purposefully obscures his most plot-twisty thoughts until a battle is over and then you realize how he's discerned what his allies intended for him to do without them telling him what to do. I'm curious if Drew, as a writer, is a pantser and does he already have this mapped out, or is the writing part of his mind a pawn to his mind's imagination section? I'm looking forward to the next book in this series. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

"Much like accountants, fey never forget a debt. Just as Fred is settling down in his new abode, he receives word that a favor is being called in, one he promised to a dangerously powerful member of otherworldly royalty. Bracing for danger, adventure, and unknown threats, Fred is instead asked to take on an entirely different role than anticipated. Acting as interim professor at one of the few universities for supernatural entities, Fred will have to navigate a strange environment, eccentric co-workers, and unenthusiastic students. Yet that alone won't be enough, for this college has more history than the tales in its tomes. Remnants of the past that could put Fred, and his students, in mortal peril. Performed by Christopher Walker, Nora Achrati, Richard Rohan, Dawn Ursula, Carolyn Kashner, Chris Stinson, Amanda Forstrom, Eva Wilhelm, Alejandro Ruiz, Bradley Foster Smith, Cody Roberts, Colleen Delany, Danny Gavigan, Eric Messner, Henry W. Kramer, Holly Adams, James Konicek, Jessica Lauren Ball, Ken Jackson, Lydia Kraniotis, Michael John Casey, Nanette Savard, Ryan Haugen, Scott McCormick, Tia Shearer and Yasmin Tuazon."
