This book isn’t so much a memoir as it is a collection of memories. They are grouped according to life period (childhood, teens, etc) and are very short (often just a page or 2). They bring to mind what seem to be simpler times. For example, though poor, Jack recalls visiting the ‘silent pictures’ as a child. And through the difficult WWI years, in the trenches in France & Belgium and then as a POW in the Netherlands, he recalls friendships and enjoyable moments as an entertainer in shows that the troops put on for one another. Some of the tales are pretty mundane, such as when he ran out of gas & had to walk for miles to get petrol or when jumped off the tram to chase his hat in the wind after it blew off. The tone is light-hearted and casual, and Jack has an endearingly appreciative and positive attitude. As another reviewer commented, it reads like chatting with someone in the local pub. Not riveting but quaint.
