The book is a very short guide, looking at financial planning for retirement aimed at citizens of the United States. The book suggests that all American workers should prepare for their retirement as early as they can so that they are ‘planning ahead’ for their life as well as their families’ lives. A few subjects include the types of insurance, investment, medical care, and wills.

The book is written humorously and bluntly, with plenty of anonymous case studies so readers can see various perspectives on how the Reconfigurement financial plan could apply to them. There are a lot of figures as well, with supported references, and the structure is easy to follow. In reference to the writing, the book is extremely engaging as the author speaks directly to the readers like a conversation in written form. The subject of retirement can be considered very dry and the book contains a lot of terms that are explained briefly. So, to keep readers invested in the content, there are jokes and humour.
