Mean Girls meets Scream in this heart-pounding psychological thriller about a group of friends stranded on an island with a serial killer on the loose. Riley March and her friends are headed to ritzy, remote Palm Key Island for one last blow-out party weekend before college. It’s the vacation of a lifetime: beautiful beaches, epic nightlife, and hot guys like Riley’s crush—superstar soccer player Sebastian Ramos. There’s just one catch. Everyone on this trip is hiding something. Riley is hiding her past in order to fit in. Sebastian is hiding his feelings for Riley. And someone is hiding what really happened to Jordyn Chang, a classmate that mysteriously died last summer. Things take a dark turn after one of their friends goes missing, and a hurricane cuts the group off from civilization. Trapped inside their rental house, a killer stalks them one by one. No one is safe. Everyone’s a suspect. As the body count rises, Riley and her friends will have to confront the secrets they’ve been keeping if they want to stay alive…… (meer)

The Summer Rental is a quick YA slasher. I enjoyed guessing who dunnit and the red harrings throughout kept you guessing . After the first half of the book the second half picks up speed.

This was great - a fun horror thriller that felt right out the 80s slasher era. Good characters, easy to follow amongst a large cast and good backstories for all. The mystery kept me guessing and proposing all sorts of scenarios in my head. Pick this up and read it if you're looking for something entertaining. 5 stars

Thank you to LibraryThing and Rektok Ross for the personalized ARC! ( )

I grew up devouring R.L. Stein Fearstreet books, so this book scratched a nostalgia itch that i did not even know that i had. The book has a fun premise that promises a thrilling mystery and blood... Five friends head to Palm Key Island for a final blow fourth of July party before heading off to college in the fall. Since this book is obviously a thriller, all of the characters are keeping secrets and things take a dark turn when one of them goes missing. A hurricane traps them on the island as killer begins to pick them off one by one... This book was sold with a hype blub, "mean girls meets scream" and it 100% delivered on this promise. Obviously the uber rich teenagers have unlikable personalities, but the main character is worth rooting for. This book was cinematically written with engaging dialogue so i definitely felt like i was watching a slasher film while reading the words on the pages. I recommend this book for fans of fear street, scream and mean girls. This was a quick and fun summer thriller.

A great YA novel about a group of eighteen-year-olds who take their summer vacation at a beach house in FL. There is a tornado warning, but hey let's not let THAT stop the party! Oh yeah, their beach house was where some young adults were murdered, but whatevs. A good mystery book, and "Will senpai notice me?" action. And murder. ( )

Thanks to the author, Rektok Ross, for a copy of the book, Summer Rental. As always, the opinions expressed in my review are honest and all my own.

Riley March is joining her friends for one last big blowout vacation before they each go off to college. She would love to catch the attention of her crush, Sebastian Ramos, but he has been so hot and cold with her for the last few months that she doesn't know what to expect from him. In the meantime, all of her friends are still affected by the suicide last summer of Jordyn Chang. When Riley starts to experience strange things happening in the house where they are staying that is supposedly haunted, she starts to question what she really knows about her friends. With a hurricane approaching, she may be in more danger than she knows.

Summer Rental is reminiscent of all the horror films where the teenage main characters do everything wrong to put themselves in danger. If that is the point of this novel, then more details should have been included to bring that idea to the forefront. However, Summer Rental does use red herrings successfully to create suspense, while making it difficult to figure out exactly who is behind the increasingly scary events in the story. Even though the character development is minimal in favor of the creation of a frightening mood and atmosphere, most of characters still come across as unlikable and difficult to care about. Overall, the weaknesses of Summer Rental are balanced with its strengths. ( )
