Benefited from being written by a Brit, instead of an American. Whereas the latter would almost invariably be an uncritical cheerleader for captialism, Fulcher maintains a certain distance that allows him to see both benefits and drawbacks. This overview did not touch on the topics of particular interest to me (e.g., how the introduction of aggressive capitalistic consumerism into more traditional societies can be disorienting and destructive)-- it is, after all, I suppose, only a "very short introduction"--what it does provide is useful and accessible. ( ) A must read for any english speaking human in the world. Capitalism is often taken as the normal or even "natural" organization of an economy, but without taking a radical stance, this book guides the reader into understanding the framework for capitalism's existence as well as its mechanics and brief history. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

Capitalism: A Very Short Introduction outlines the history and development of capitalism and addresses important 21st-century issues, such as New Labour's relationship with capitalism, recent crises in capitalist systems, the significance of global capitalism, and distinctive national models of capitalism. The word ‘capitalism’ is heard and used frequently. Most people have an opinion about capitalism. Has capital escaped the nation-state by going global? Is capitalism doomed? There are alternatives to capitalism, in the guises of socialism, communal and cooperative experiments, and alternatives proposed by environmentalists. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
